What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal Japanese woodblock triptych, densely populated and full of dynamic movement. At the very center in the foreground, a huge wild boar with bristling black fur, white tusks and wide-open jaws dominates the view; a hunter in armor with a yellow spotted cloak grapples with it on its back, raising a sword. Around them, a crowd of samurai warriors on foot and on horseback, wearing armor in blue, red and gold and carrying bows, spears and swords, forms a chaotic semi-circle. Two hunting dogs —one white with black spots and one ochre— and a small white hare run beneath the boar. In the background, snow-capped Mount Fuji rises under a pale mottled blue sky, with green foothills and encampments of white tents. On the left, among gnarled pine trees with grey speckled trunks, a group of noble onlookers sits under a red parasol watching the hunt. The light is flat and decorative, typical of woodblock prints, with saturated colors —blues, ochres, greens, black— and many small vertical cartouches with Japanese text in yellow and pale pink along the margins.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the black boar at the center that anchors all the action, then follow the ring of hunters around it. Lift your eyes to the snow-capped Fuji and see how the calm landscape frames the chaos in the foreground. Notice the small animals running beneath the beast and the spectators under the red parasol on the upper left slope.
ContextContexto
Work by Utagawa Yoshifuji (1828–1887), dated to the mid-1840s during Japan's Edo period (1615–1868). It is a color woodblock print triptych (mokuhanga) in the musha-e warrior genre. It depicts the legendary hunt organized by shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147–1199) on the slopes of Mount Fuji, a popular subject in kabuki theatre and prints for its blend of martial prowess and courtly spectacle. The Cleveland Museum of Art source provides no detailed description, but the title and iconography allow identification of the historical legendary episode. Specific details about the commission or first edition are not recorded.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on this being a Japanese woodblock print triptych from the mid-1840s by Utagawa Yoshifuji. I see three sheets joined to create a crowded horizontal scene with flat, saturated inks. The intense black of the wild boar contrasts with the pale blue sky and the ochre of the armor. I notice the text cartouches in yellow and pale pink along the margins and how well the color registration is preserved. It is a decorative print, not a painting, made for wide circulation, which makes its conservation quite delicate.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I look first at the background: snow-capped Mount Fuji under a pale mottled blue sky, dominating the entire hunt. Even though the scene is chaotic and earthly, with samurai, horses and dogs surrounding a huge boar, the volcano sets the scale and orientation. It reminds me how the Japanese used Fuji as a fixed point to tell legends. The light is flat, with no astronomical shadows, but the clear sky suggests an open day, perfect for landscape observation. Here Fuji is more symbol than real mountain, an eternal visual anchor.

There is a giant wild boar in the middle and it looks really angry with its mouth open! A man with a yellow cape with little dots is on top of it with a sword. Around them there are lots of samurai with blue, red and gold armor, and some on horses. There are also two little dogs, one white with spots and another light brown, and a white hare running. In the back you can see snowy Mount Fuji and some little white houses that are tents. Everything is super crowded and looks like an exciting adventure!
