What you would seeLo que verías

A rectangular textile viewed frontally against a plain off-white background, filling almost the entire frame. The base cloth is a warm light brown, like aged kraft paper, patterned with dense geometric printing in very dark brown-black. The design is organized in horizontal bands: wide zones filled with small aligned triangles in tight rows alternate with narrower zones of thin, continuous parallel lines. The surface shows pronounced vertical and horizontal fold creases, wrinkles, frayed and wavy edges, and four small irregular holes scattered near the center and right side that reveal the background beneath. The lower edge is notably worn, with tears and lifting fibers. Even, diffuse lighting reveals a matte, fibrous, slightly porous texture typical of beaten bark, with subtle variations in ink density suggesting hand block printing. The scale appears to be that of a medium-sized fragment, roughly the size of a large unfolded napkin, with no human figures present.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the overall rhythm of alternating triangle fields and linear stripes. Then look closely at the edges and small holes to notice wrinkles, transparency and wear. See how slight irregularities in the tiny triangles reveal the repeated hand gesture of block printing.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a tapa cloth, known in Hawaii as kapa, dated to before 1930 and attributed to Oceania, Polynesia, Hawaii, 20th century. The maker is unknown. The technique is listed as probably mulberry bark (Broussonetia papyrifera), beaten into sheets and then dyed or printed. The source provides no further description. In general, such textiles are made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree, beaten into felt-like sheets and decorated with geometric motifs using natural dyes. No specific information is recorded about its original use, owner, or collection context beyond the gift of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Munro.

Thomas Munro.

Curious detailDato curioso

Hawaiian kapa is made by beating wauke bark with carved wooden mallets called iʻe kuku, which create a distinctive textured and audible pattern in the fiber, rather than weaving on a loom.

I focus on what time has left on this kapa: those sharp creases, the frayed and wavy edges and the four small holes that reveal the background. It is mulberry bark beaten into a sheet, porous and matte, in a light yellowish brown like aged kraft paper. I see well organized horizontal bands, some with tiny triangles in dense rows and others with thin parallel lines in very dark brown-black. The variations in ink tell me it was hand stamped with carved seals.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this rectangular cloth I think of orderly constellations. The wide bands look like skies filled with triangles aligned like stars in rows, and the narrow stripes are orbits with continuous parallel lines. Everything is printed in very dark brown-black on a light yellowish brown background. It is a visual rhythm, a repetitive pattern that invites counting and measuring. I imagine tracing it with a finger, looking for regularities like someone charting the sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant paper blanket someone painted with little stamps. It is light brown and has stripes going from side to side. Some stripes are full of tiny black triangles very close together and others have just straight little lines. It is all wrinkly, with folds and four tiny little holes in the middle and on one side. The edges look nibbled and uneven. I want to count all the little triangles one by one.

Look closely: how many irregular little holes scattered on the cloth let the light background show through?

    HintPista

Look near the center and toward the right side, they are small and not part of the pattern.

  2. #2

What two geometric shapes repeat in alternating horizontal bands on the light brown background?

    HintPista

Some bands have tiny pointed shapes in rows and others have thin continuous stripes.

Unas bandas tienen piquitos chiquitos en filas y otras tienen rayitas finas y continuas.

  3. #3

What tone is the base color of this barkcloth, similar to aged kraft paper?

    HintPista

It is not the very dark brown-black of the print, but the light color of the background.
