What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical page from a bound sketchbook, photographed against a dark gray background. The paper is aged, beige and slightly creamy, with irregular, worn upper edges and a visible horizontal binding strip near the bottom, where another page begins. The graphite drawings are very faint, sparse, and spread out, leaving most of the sheet empty. At the upper right, the largest and most defined motif: a craggy rock or mountain peak, built with short hatching, angular contours, and small shadows that suggest fractured stone. To its left, much smaller, are other barely outlined rocks. Midway down on the right are two tall, narrow conifers, drawn with quick vertical strokes and small zigzags for foliage. On the left, at the same height, a loose cluster of leafy trees with thin trunks and cloudy canopies. To their right, a faint diagonal form shaded with fine lines, hard to identify. At the lower right are two small vertical rectangles, like windows, each containing trees and a tentative landscape. The overall effect is quiet and fragmentary: isolated notes of nature floating on warm, empty paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top, with the most finished rock, and then let your eye descend through the increasingly faint fragments. Notice how much blank paper remains between them. At the bottom, the two small rectangles change the reading: they are not just notes on nature, but possible paintings already being imagined.

ContextContexto

Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880) was an American landscape painter of the second generation of the Hudson River School. Based in New York, with a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building, he made annual summer trips to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and other scenic places in New England. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this sketchbook accompanied him in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he drew Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island in Casco Bay. He used graphite studies like these as the basis for oil paintings completed in his studio, such as A Home in the Wilderness (1866). It is not known exactly which site this page represents.

A Home in the Wilderness (1866).

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: at the bottom of the page Gifford framed two tiny vertical sketches inside rectangles, like miniature paintings within the sketchbook page — an early form of thumbnail composition studies.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the fragility of the support: a creamy beige paper with an irregular, worn upper edge shaped by use and time. The graphite is very faint, almost floating, which is why the page feels so empty. Only at the upper right is the line more insistent, with angular contours and short shading to suggest fractured stone. As a conservator I wonder how to preserve that instability without darkening it, how to protect what is barely sketched without over-fixing it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like a night sky in negative: a vast, light field where a few isolated motifs float like constellations. At the upper right the jagged rock shines brightest, darker and sharper, like a main star. Around it, slender conifers and trees with cloud-like crowns act as minor reference points. It reminds me of how we map immensity with fragmentary notes. Here the artist does not complete the landscape, he just records positions, leaving much emptiness to suggest vastness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet looks like a hideout with tiny little drawings. If you glance quickly you almost see nothing, everything is so light. But if you get closer you find treasures: a big jagged rock at the upper right, two skinny pines made with little lines and some trees with fluffy cotton-like crowns. At the bottom there are two little windows with landscapes inside. I like that they left so much empty space, as if the paper itself were part of the drawing and you could breathe between the trees.
