What you would seeLo que verías

Against a flat neutral gray background lies an ancient bronze fibula seen from above, placed horizontally. The object has an elongated triangular outline, like an archaic safety pin. Along the top, a long straight pin of darkened metal runs from left to right; its tip rests and locks into a small catch or plate at the right end. At the left end the pin curls back to form a double spiral that acts as a spring. The lower bow is thick and solid, curving in a wide open U shape and divided by a series of transverse rings and molded ridges that create a ribbed rhythm across its entire surface. The patina is complex and mottled: dominant verdigris and copper greens, with reddish brown spots of oxidation, whitish crusts of corrosion and brighter polished areas where light catches the volume. The texture is rough and pitted, with encrustations typical of aged bronze, yet the object still feels sturdy and compact. Soft even lighting creates a faint shadow beneath, giving weight and relief against the flat ground and highlighting small details like the incised lines between the rings.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the straight pin and where it locks on the right, then trace the ribbed lower bow and count its segments. Linger on the left spiral and on the shifts in patina color, which reveal almost three thousand years of age.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this fibula dates to the 600s BCE and comes from the cultural area of Persia, corresponding to present-day Iran or Iraq, with no precise provenance recorded. The maker is unknown. It is made of bronze and classified as jewelry. Fibulae were dress brooches used to fasten clothing, precursors of the modern safety pin, widely used in antiquity from the Mediterranean to the Near East. Its segmented bow and spiral spring shape is characteristic of Iron Age types in that region. The specific archaeological findspot of this piece is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Fibulae like this one were not only ornaments but functional fasteners that held cloaks and tunics without buttons, and their style and decoration helped signal origin and status.

What fascinates me most is its skin of time, that mottled patina with greenish verdigris, reddish browns and whitish haze of corrosion. I see pitted bronze with crusts and polished areas where light reveals the volume of the segmented arch. It amazes me how the spiral spring and the long pin remain complete after so many centuries, holding the elongated triangular shape together. It is a rough yet solid metal, where oxidation tells its history and the function as a brooch remains clearly visible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Seen from above against the gray background, this fibula looks like a portable constellation to me. The straight pin is like an axis crossing the sky, held at one end by the small catch and born at the other from a double spiral that recalls a galaxy. The lower arch, wide and grooved with its transverse rings, evokes the waves of a crater or marked orbits. The dark bronze with greens and browns looks like an oxidized star map from the seventh century B.C. that once traveled on clothing.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant and very old safety pin to fasten a giant's jacket. It has a super long needle that goes from one side to the other and tucks into a little hook so it does not prick. On one side it has a curly tail like two little snails together. Underneath it has a thick part with many little lines like a little worm with rings. It is all stained green, brown and white, as if it had been buried, and it feels rough but still looks strong and pretty.
