Most of the surface is empty, aged cream-colored paper, slightly mottled and darkened at the edges, which gives the scene a great deal of air. Action is concentrated in the lower left and center. A low, tangled trellis of thin stakes and flowering chrysanthemum branches rises diagonally, drawn in gray ink with touches of muted pink, brown, and dusty green. Around and beneath it is a litter of small, round puppies in white, black, brown, and spotted coats: some sleep curled up, others play or look outward. One puppy at the far left tilts its head upward. Above the flowers, a flock of small sparrows perches, pecks, and flutters with wings open; toward the right, a few birds fly off across the blank paper, growing smaller and more spaced out. On the third panel, a puppy appears only as a faint outline. Pale circular marks, one on each panel, puncture the surface. At the upper left are vertical black calligraphy and a small red seal.","contexto":"The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this work as Puppies, Sparrows, and Chrysanthemums, by Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799), dated to about 1792–94, from Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). It is ink and slight color on paper. The panels were originally fusuma, sliding doors inside a building, later remounted as hanging scrolls; the circular marks are traces of the former door pulls, or hikite. According to the museum, Rosetsu often used animals to suggest the human condition. The specific building for which the doors were made is not stated in the source information.","como_mirarla":"Start at the lower left, where the dogs and the trellis set the scene, then follow the branches and the sparrows toward the right, into the flight and the empty space. Return to the far left and find the puppy looking up with its head tilted: that small exchange ties the earthbound group to the birds. Finally, notice the pale circles and the faintly outlined puppy on the third panel; they alter the reading of what is painting, time, and trace.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: on the third panel from the left there is a puppy drawn almost only in outline, so pale that at first glance it looks unfinished or like a ghost among the other, fully modeled dogs.","preguntas":["What story emerges from the exchange of looks and calls between the puppies on the ground and the sparrows on the trellis?","How does the large expanse of empty paper change the sense of time, sound, and movement in the scene?","Should the circular marks left by the door pulls be considered damage, or part of the work’s history that is worth keeping visible?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cachorros, gorriones y crisantemos","se_ve":"Es una composición horizontal y ancha, formada por cuatro paneles altos de papel colocados uno junto al otro, separados por líneas muy delgadas y claras. I focus on how fragile this support is: four panels of creamy paper, very empty at the top, with soft age stains and darkened edges.
