Silk: lampas weave
What you would seeLo que verías
A nearly square textile fragment with irregular, frayed edges is photographed flat against a pale cloth background. Two tones dominate: a very dark, chocolate-like brown and a muted golden beige used for the woven motifs. The surface shows the fine, slightly rough grain of silk, with small losses, soft creases, and areas where wear makes the pattern blur. At center left sits a large, incomplete circular medallion, cut off by the edges of the fragment. Its rim carries a band of small dot-like 'pearls.' Inside, a straight-sided diamond frames a perfectly symmetrical scene: two confronted peacocks flank a vertical Tree of Life. Beneath their feet are two smaller confronted animals, perhaps lions or dogs. In the spaces between the diamond and the circle, griffins appear above and floral or vine motifs below. At upper right, touching the large medallion, is a smaller circle with a Kufic inscription around a diaper-patterned center. Around these medallions are repeated palmettes, scrolling vines, and partial winged creatures—including what may be winged goats along the top. Everything suggests a larger repeating pattern that once continued well beyond what survives.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large medallion and follow the line of the diamond until you reach the paired peacocks at the center. Then look beneath their feet and into the corners, where smaller animals quietly complicate the symmetry. Finally, move to the small medallion at upper right: its Kufic inscription and the cropped motifs at the edges reveal that this is only part of a much larger pattern.
ContextContexto
The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this piece as a fragment from a funeral garment or pall, in silk lampas weave, by an unknown maker. Its culture is listed as 'Iran?' and in the style of the Buyid period (945–1055), but its radiocarbon date is 1649–1955, with 95% probability. That gap is central: the textile probably imitates or revives a much earlier visual language rather than dating from the Buyid era itself. Confronted animals around a tree of life, griffins, palmettes, and Kufic inscriptions were long-lived motifs in Islamic and Persianate textiles. Its exact place of manufacture and original use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its Buyid-period style (945–1055), radiocarbon dating places the silk between 1649 and 1955—a textile can look medieval and still have been woven many centuries later.

This fragment makes me think about hands and time. I see frayed edges, soft folds, and blurry areas from wear, on a fine, slightly rough lampas silk. The two tones, dark chocolate brown and muted golden beige, form a large beaded medallion cut off at the edges, with an inner lozenge and peacocks flanking the tree of life. The radiocarbon date between 1649 and 1955 intrigues me, even though the style recalls the Buyid period. It is likely a later imitation reviving older motifs, preserved as a funerary cloth.

I look at this textile as if it were a star map. The medallions are like orbits: the large one dominates with its beaded ring and perfectly symmetrical central lozenge, and the smaller one at the top right looks like a moon with Kufic script around it. The confronted peacocks, the lions or dogs below, the griffins in the corners and the palmettes create orderly constellations. I love that the pattern continued beyond the fragment, like a sky we cannot see in full and that suggests a universe woven in silk.

It looks like an old blanket for playing treasure hunt. I see a big circle cut off with little dots like tiny pearls and inside two pretty big birds looking at each other in front of a little tree. Below there are two small animals that look like little lions with tiny paws. There are also little plants, tails with wings and a small circle with weird little letters I do not understand. Everything is made with brown and beige threads that are already worn and frayed at the edges, as if it was used a lot.
