Near the top are two large, fully open blooms: on the left, a layered crimson rose with golden-yellow stamens at its heart; at the center, a larger and much darker flower, velvety purple verging on black, with deep red shadows and a small cluster of yellow stamens. Around them are two tight reddish buds wrapped in pointed green sepals and, on the far left, a small spent yellow flower on a slender stalk. The stem, rendered in muted green, carries fine prickles and branches into compound leaves. Each leaf is oval, pointed, and finely serrated, with visible veining and soft modeling that ranges from blue-green in shadow to paler green where light falls. Some lower leaves turn slightly, revealing darker undersides. The illumination is even and gentle, without cast shadows, so texture comes from stippled dots and delicate hand-applied washes rather than strong contrast. Below the plant, elegant cursive inscriptions name the variety in Latin on the left and in French on the right, with smaller credits beneath. A few faint foxing-like spots and the paper's slight grain are visible on close looking.","contexto":"Published in France between 1817 and 1824, this print belongs to Pierre-Joseph Redouté's celebrated series The Roses. The Cleveland Museum of Art credits Langlois as engraver, with Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) and Henri Joseph Redouté (1766–1853). Made by color stipple engraving with watercolor added by hand, it reproduces Redouté's botanical watercolors. According to the museum, a thin wash matching the printing ink was meticulously applied over the image, with occasional contrasting tints for highlights. Although highly refined, the prints do not fully imitate the spontaneity of the master's brushwork.","como_mirarla":"Start with the darkest rose at the center and notice how its color shifts between purple, black, and crimson. Then move across the leaves, comparing their cool greens with the warm flowers, and finish with the tiny yellow bloom on the left, which quietly balances the whole arrangement.","dato_curioso":"No impression is entirely identical to another: after printing, each sheet was finished by hand with watercolor, so subtle variations in tone and highlight remain from copy to copy.","preguntas":["What changes when a flower is shown removed from any garden, soil, or season, against a blank ground?","How do the almost black petals affect your sense of beauty, freshness, or decay in this rose?","Where can you still sense the hand of the colorist, rather than the regularity of the printing process?"]},"es":{"titulo":"The Roses: Rosa Gallica Purpurea Velutina Parva","se_ve":"Sobre una hoja de papel color crema cálido, ya algo envejecido, un solo tallo de rosal se eleva casi vertical por el centro y deja amplio espacio vacío a su alrededor.
