What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page, warm cream in tone, slightly wavy and darker at the edges, holds a narrow column of Gothic script on the right. The text is written mainly in dark brown-black ink, with rubrics and highlighted words in red, and decorated initials in blue, pink, red, and gold that punctuate the lines; a few small rectangular line-fillers in blue, pink, and gold close some verses. Around the text grows an exuberant marginal border of curling vines, leaves, tiny flowers, and gold dots, denser on the left, top, and bottom. A large foliate initial forms a vertical stem along the left side of the text block. In the left margin stands a fantastical long-legged green bird with a brown wing, pink feet and beak, and a blue-and-pink pointed hat. Small naturalistic birds perch among the tendrils, and a dark winged insect appears near the lower left. At the bottom center, a hybrid musician with a human torso in a blue garment and red head covering plays a stringed instrument, while his pink animal body ends in a long tail. At the upper left is the handwritten number “576.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the column of text, then follow the vine that frames it as if it were a stem growing around the words. Look next at the margins: the bird in a pointed hat on the left and the hybrid violinist below turn a devotional page into a small scene of play. Notice how the decorated initials and red rubrics guide reading while also organizing the decoration.

ContextContexto

This is folio 282v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris, France, around 1405, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours in Paris in 1404-05, perhaps as a luxury ready-made volume, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. The codex was a collaborative work: six painting manners have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. Overall planning and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. This particular folio has no large miniature or visible coat of arms.

Curious detailDato curioso

Within the same codex, the Florentine assistant known as Zecho da Firenze signed his name on folio 208 verso, an unusually concrete trace of an individual hand in a collaboratively produced manuscript.

This page makes me think about hands and materials. The warm cream vellum is slightly rippled and darker at the edges, a sign of time and handling. The gothic text was written in dark brownish-black ink, with rubrics in red and small initials in blue, pink and gold. What moves me most is the margin: curling vines, leaves and gold dots that wrap around the text column. It is not just decoration, it is a vegetal structure that frames and protects the written word, made with gold leaf and tempera with astonishing precision.

I see this page as a small, ordered cosmos. On the right, the text column is like a meridian, straight and rhythmic, marked by colored initials that act as guiding stars. Around it, the vegetal border expands like a constellation of tendrils, leaves and golden dots orbiting the text. Even the marginal creatures feel like inhabitants of that universe: the green bird with a pointed hat above, the little birds among the vines and the hybrid musician below. Everything revolves around the word, like planets around a bright center.

This page is full of hidden surprises! The text is tucked to one side, but around it there is a magic vine with little leaves and shiny gold dots. On the left edge there is a very fancy green bird with super long pink legs and a little blue and pink hat, as if it were going to a party! Lower down there are tiny birds and a little winged bug. And the funniest thing is the little man in blue clothes and a red hat playing an instrument, but his body is pink like an animal with a long tail. It feels like a game!
