On the right, a dense column of Gothic black script in Latin occupies the page, punctuated by four illuminated initials in blue, pinkish red and burnished gold, each with delicate white filigree and geometric infill in red and blue. From the large initial B at top, a vertical gilded stem extends the full height of the text, sprouting a delicate vine border that curls around the left and top margins. The vine is rendered with thin gold tendrils, blue scrollwork, and small trilobed leaves in red, blue, green and gold, plus tiny gold buds and butterflies. Near the top, a small grey-brown bird perches on the vine; another bird appears at the lower left. Midway down the left margin, a vivid grotesque — a reddish-orange hybrid with a blue hat, green mantle and long tail — holds up a blue mirror with a gold frame and gazes into it. At the bottom, a pink dragon-like beast with blue wings and golden horns bites or disgorges the vine. The palette is rich yet delicate, with matte tempera and glints of gold leaf catching light. The overall impression is intimate and precious, a handheld devotional object where sacred text and playful fantasy coexist.","contexto":"This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made around 1405 in Paris. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, the book was a collaborative production showing six distinct painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The main planner and painter of seventeen large miniatures was the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted chiefly on the borders by the Florentine Zecho da Firenze, who signed on fol. 208v. Rather than a direct commission, Charles the Noble probably acquired the volume ready-made for the luxury market during a stay in Paris in 1404-05; his coat of arms appears on twenty folios. The work exemplifies International Gothic illumination in ink, tempera and gold on vellum.","como_mirarla":"First take in the orderly text block and colorful initials, then trace the golden vine as a continuous path from the top initial to the bottom creature. Notice how the two marginal grotesques interact with the border — one admiring itself in a mirror, the other chewing the vine — small humorous interruptions that reframe the solemn prayer.","dato_curioso":"Marginal grotesques known as drôleries were a hallmark of Gothic manuscripts, blending playful fantasy and moral satire alongside sacred texts, and were not meant to illustrate the psalm they surround.","preguntas":["How do you interpret the coexistence of a sacred prayer and whimsical, almost satirical creatures in the margins?","What does the small scale and lavish use of gold suggest about how and by whom this book was used?","Which tiny detail — a butterfly, a bird, a leaf — most changes the mood of the page for you?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: fol.
