This is folio 175v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), dated about 1405 and made in Paris with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was a luxury volume probably acquired ready-made during the king's trip to Paris in 1404-05 rather than commissioned directly, and his coat of arms appears on twenty folios. It is a collaborative work showing six painting styles — two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish — planned and decorated by the Bolognese artist known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, who painted seventeen large miniatures, assisted principally on the borders by the Florentine Zecho da Firenze.
