What you would seeLo que verías

An open book fills almost the entire image, seen slightly from the right, with the thick block of gilt-edged pages visible along the right side and a sliver of the facing page at the left. On creamy, uneven vellum, a column of Gothic script in dark brown ink occupies the center-left, ruled into tight lines. Five large decorated initials in pink, blue, and gold open the paragraphs, accompanied by small horizontal ornaments and a tiny flower. From those initials grows an exuberant border: a vertical stem in blue and gold runs down the right side and spreads across the bottom into curling vines, ivy leaves, dots, buds, and small flowers in red, blue, green, and gold. At the top perch a pink bird, butterflies or insects, and a snail-like form. On the right margin hangs a hybrid creature with a blue hood and long red body, holding up a pink bell. At the lower left, a green quadruped with a curled tail, pointed red-and-blue hat, and pink ribbon appears to prance. The number “339” is handwritten at the upper right. The gold catches the light, contrasting with the matte parchment and the dark, dense lettering.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orderly block of text, then let your gaze escape into the margins. Notice how the border grows from the initials themselves, and finish with the creatures at the right and bottom edges: their humor changes this devotional page into a small world of fantasy.

ContextContexto

This is folio 175 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. It is credited to the Master of the Brussels Initials and associates. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex — Italian, French, and Netherlandish. This page has no large miniature; its interest lies in the text and marginal decoration.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the solemn Latin page is guarded by two playful hybrids — on the right, one rings a bell, and at the bottom, a green animal wearing a pointed hat seems to dance with a pink ribbon.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I look first at the material. This creamy vellum is not flat, it has texture and pores, so the brown ink of the gothic script sits differently on each line. The gold on the edge and initials is not paint, it is gold leaf that shines with the light and must be protected from touching. The five initials in pink, blue and gold are made with fine tempera, and the border with blue and gold ivy. Every small red or green dot is fragile, so the book is opened only a little.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher I am drawn to how this folio organizes space. The text column is like a dense dark firmament, and around it the border is an orbit. The blue and gold stem running down the right forms a vertical axis, like a meridian, and the vines, flowers and dots are scattered stars. At the top the number 339 is our coordinate. The pink bird and the creature with a bell look like invented constellations in the margins, reminding us that even a prayer book had its own universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love hunting for little monsters in the borders. On this page the text is in the middle, very neat, but all around it many things happen. At the bottom there is a little green animal with a curly tail and a red and blue pointy hat jumping with a pink ribbon. On the right hangs a long red creature with a blue hood holding a pink bell, as if it is going to ring it. At the top there is a pink bird and a tiny snail. It feels like someone let their playful drawings escape from the text.
