cloisonné enamel and gilt copper
What you would seeLo que verías
This is a sculptural container shaped as a stocky, four-legged mythical beast — the qilin, often called a unicorn — photographed in three-quarter view against a smooth gradient from dark to light gray. The body is compact with short, sturdy legs and a slightly sunken back where an elongated, gilt-rimmed lid sits flush along the spine. The entire surface is covered in cloisonné enamel on a deep cobalt blue ground, densely patterned with lotus blossoms and scrolling vines in red, mustard yellow, emerald green, turquoise and white. Thin, raised gilt wires outline each cell and catch the light along the belly, flanks and spine. The head is small with a short snout, tiny ears, a single forward-curving gilt horn, and almond-shaped eyes in red and white outlined in gold. The mane, the upcurled tail, the hooves and the dorsal trim are polished gilt copper with a warm metallic sheen. A small cylindrical neck with a red fret border rises from the withers, serving as a spout. Soft studio lighting creates gentle shadows under the belly and bright highlights on the gilding, emphasizing both texture and volume.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the contrast between the deep blue enamel and the gleaming gold of the tail, horn and hooves. Then trace the floral tapestry that wraps the whole body. Finally look for the small cylindrical collar on the withers and the seam of the dorsal lid that reveal its function as a container.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a gilt copper and cloisonné enamel container from China, Qing dynasty, bearing a Qianlong mark and dated to his reign, 1736–95. The unicorn corresponds to the qilin, an auspicious mythical creature in Chinese tradition linked to benevolence and good fortune, common in court decorative arts. Cloisonné enamel flourished under the Qing, especially in the eighteenth century, for palace incense burners, vessels and offering sets. No maker is known, and no specific provenance beyond the Norweb Collection is given, which is typical for such imperial workshop pieces.

Curious detailDato curioso
Qing cloisonné was made by soldering fine metal wires onto a copper body to create cells that were filled with colored glass paste and fired multiple times; the gold lines visible here are fire-gilded copper that both contains the enamel and decorates the surface.

If you look closely you will see the cloisonné work that holds the whole piece together, it is gilt copper with tiny cells that contain the cobalt blue enamel and the lotus scrolls in red, yellow, green and turquoise. I focus on the golden rims along the back and on the elongated lid, where you can see the polished metal catching light. The curled tail, the curved horn and the gilded hooves finish an object made to be both seen and used, perhaps as a container or incense burner for court use in Qianlong times.

This qilin makes me think of constellations, an animal that does not exist but everyone recognizes, like those shapes we draw by joining stars. Its compact body with short legs and the sunken back with a golden lid reminds me of a small planet with a crater. The cobalt blue enamel is a deep night sky and the red and turquoise scrolls are like nebulae. Even the small cylindrical neck on its withers looks like a tiny observatory pointing to the sky from the eighteenth century.

It looks like a puppy dragon with a single golden horn and a shiny curly tail. It is all painted in strong blue with little flowers in many colors as if it were wearing its favorite pajamas. It has a little lid on its back, I bet it keeps secrets or nice smelling incense inside. Its eyes are red and white and it looks very serious even though its legs are tiny and chubby. I want to pat its golden mane and see if the lid opens.
