At the centre, a rectangular block of Latin text, handwritten in dark ink in small, compact Gothic script, fills just over half the leaf. Above it, a line in red introduces the text. A large blue-grey initial D stands out, edged in gold and containing a brown oval field decorated with dotted gold plant motifs; smaller initials in blue, red, and gold also mark the paragraphs. The whole block is surrounded by a broad border in a sandy gold tone, like a granulated surface. Across it grow fine grey and silvery stems that curl into elegant scrolls at the corners. From them sprout large, highly detailed flowers: intense red carnations with dark centres, blue five-petalled flowers, a white flower with a pink centre, red buds, and small green leaves. At the bottom, perched on a scroll, is a small grey-brown bird in profile, with a pale breast, fine beak, and long tail, facing left. The light is even, without strong shadows, revealing the smooth texture of the vellum, the subtle sheen of the gold, and the almost photographic precision of petals and feathers.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 81r of the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. It was illuminated by the circle of the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, together with at least four other highly organized painters. Such a book was not made for a cleric, but for the private devotion of a layperson. Isabella probably did not commission it herself; she probably received it as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not known for certain. The realistic floral borders are characteristic of this workshop.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large D, then let your eye travel outward to the sandy-gold border. Notice how the flowers and the small bird at the bottom are painted with almost photographic precision, in contrast to the dense, regular Gothic script. That tension between reading and looking is at the heart of the page.","dato_curioso":"Despite its naturalistic flowers, butterflies, and birds, the border is not a garden view: each plant is isolated on a flat gold ground, like a specimen, a convention for which Ghent-Bruges illuminators around 1500 became famous.","preguntas":["For a book meant for private prayer, why devote so much space and skill to flowers and a bird rather than to a religious scene?","How does the border change your experience of reading—or of not being able to read—the Latin text?","What might a diplomatic gift this luxurious say about the relationship between giver and queen?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Isabel la Católica, reina de España: fol. The vellum remains smooth and bright after more than five hundred years, which speaks of a skilled parchment maker and careful preservation since. The gold of the border is not flat, it has that grainy texture that catches light and makes the flowers seem to sprout. Notice how the red of the carnation and the blue of the initial D remain vivid, without cracking. On a golden ground like stardust, constellations of flowers and a lone bird appear, all arranged around a central text as if they were stars around a planet.
