What you would seeLo que verías

The work is a black lithograph on cream paper, executed with loose, rapid and almost ghostly strokes. In the foreground a female figure dominates, seen in three-quarter view and leaning over what appears to be a box railing or balcony parapet. Her silhouette is elongated and ethereal: the face is barely suggested with wavy lines, the hair gathered in a high, airy chignon, and the light-colored dress with ruffles and lace merges with the background due to the open, broken outline. The body spans almost the entire height of the composition, placed diagonally from the upper left toward the lower center. In the background, at lower right and at a much smaller scale, two tiny figures and a horse can be made out: a man wearing a hat and a woman also leaning forward, observing. The texture is grainy, characteristic of lithographic crayon, with soft shading and smudges that suggest diffused light. In the lower right corner there is a circular monogram with the artist’s initials and a pencil signature. The overall effect conveys lightness, movement and the atmosphere of a performance seen from above, with the emptiness of the paper as a key element.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the large white outline of the woman in the foreground and how her dress dissolves into the paper. Then move your eye to the small group at lower right in the background, which reveals the scene takes place at a racetrack or circus. Notice how the emptiness and unfinished lines build the image as much as the drawn marks.

ContextContexto

This is a work by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), made in 1898 in France. It is a lithograph in the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Toulouse-Lautrec was a central figure of Parisian Post-Impressionism, known for his depictions of nightlife, cabaret and circus in Montmartre. The sitter is Émilienne d'Alençon, a dancer, actress and celebrated personality of the Belle Époque. The lithographic technique, which the artist mastered and revitalized, allowed for expressive strokes and mass distribution of prints. No further details about the edition or the specific context of this impression are given in the source description.

I pause at how fragile this black lithograph on cream paper is. Toulouse-Lautrec's line is loose and grainy, almost a swift smudge of the lithographic crayon, leaving a lot of empty space with no closed outline. That makes it luminous but very vulnerable to light and humidity. I see the dress that merges into the background, the wavy lines of the barely hinted face and the monogram in the lower right corner. It is an ethereal work that needs dim light and constant care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this print as a constellation drawn with few strokes. The main figure spans almost the full height diagonally, from the upper left toward the center, like an elongated nebula. In the background, to the right, two tiny silhouettes and a horse appear, small as satellites watching the show. The cream paper works as a night sky and the grainy black draws orbits of soft light. Everything feels suspended, captured in an ephemeral instant from an elevated box.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the lady is peeking at something really fun from a balcony. Her dress is big and fluffy and her face is barely there, just a few little lines. I like that she is not fully drawn, as if she is fading into the air. Behind her, very small, there is a man with a hat, another lady leaning over and a little horse. Everything is made with soft smudges and black scribbles on cream colored paper. It feels like a super quick drawing made before the show ends.
