What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a soft light-gray background, a tall, slender ewer stands upright with a low circular foot, a pear-shaped body that swells toward the base, a knotted collar below a narrow neck, and a flared, slightly uneven rim. Its surface is weathered silver, mottled with dark tarnish and warm golden traces where gilding survives, entirely worked in repoussé relief. Three horizontal bands encircle the body, divided by leafy and egg-and-dart borders. The upper band, beneath a wreath of large gilded leaves and a braided bulge, shows a spirited hunt: deer and hares fleeing a lioness and hounds amid sparse tufts of ground. Raking light catches the raised muscles and flowing tails. The broad middle band presents the festive followers of Bacchus: a central youthful male with a garland, a veiled female figure, and companions with drapery clinging to their bodies, arms raised in dance, gilding highlighting hair, cloth, and attributes. Near the foot, the lowest band holds sea creatures among stylized waves, now worn but legible. The aged patina, subtle dents, and softened edges speak of long burial and use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the whole tapering form first, foot to mouth, then move slowly down the three narrative bands. Linger on the golden figures dancing in the middle; they are the festive hinge that turns hunting and fishing into a celebration of wine and hospitality.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this ewer dates to the late 300s CE and is attributed to Byzantium, possibly Syria, in the Byzantine period. Made of silver with traces of gilding, it is part of the Medieval Art collection and its maker is unknown. It was almost certainly used to serve wine in the dining room of a wealthy household. Its three bands were read as a wish for plenty: game pursued by predators at the top, edible sea life at the bottom, and in the center the merry retinue of Bacchus, the Roman wine god known as Dionysos in Greek. The exact findspot is not recorded, but the vessel shows how classical pagan imagery persisted on luxury tableware in Late Antiquity.

Curious detailDato curioso

The gilding is not merely decorative: on Late Roman silver, thin gold was applied to highlight flesh, hair, and drapery against the bright silver ground, creating a two-tone effect that still glimmers after more than sixteen centuries.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does knowing this was a working wine pitcher, not a display sculpture, change how you read its lively scenes?¿Cómo cambia el significado de la jarra al pensar que no era adorno sino un utensilio para servir vino en fiestas?
  2. What connections can you draw between land, sea, and the human revel in the middle band?¿Qué relación ves entre las tres bandas: caza en tierra, danza humana y vida marina?
  3. Why might an elite household in the late 300s, in an increasingly Christian empire, still choose Bacchic revelry for its table?¿Por qué una familia cristiana o en transición del siglo IV seguiría eligiendo al dios Baco para decorar su mesa?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the skin of this silver ewer with traces of gilding from the late fourth century. I see the dark patina, the stains, the subtle dents and the worn flared rim, traces of its use for serving wine. I admire the repoussé work in three bands separated by vegetal friezes of leaves and egg-and-dart: on top the hunt of deer and hares chased by a lioness and hounds, in the center the dancing retinue of Bacchus with garlands and thyrsi, below sea creatures among stylized waves. Each relief still holds golden glimmers that raking light brings back.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This pear-shaped ewer feels like a small domestic cosmos from late antiquity. Its vertical form with circular foot, widening body and narrow neck organizes the universe in three bands: a sky of the hunt with deer, hares, lioness and dogs, a festive earth with the retinue of Bacchus or Dionysus dancing half-draped, and a deep sea with creatures among waves. Attributed to Byzantium, possibly Syria, it sums up the abundance wished for at the table. It is medieval luxury tableware that keeps classical pagan motifs to accompany wine in wealthy residences.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This jar looks like a three-layer cake made of shiny silver! On top I see a race where deer and hares run very fast chased by a lioness and little hunting dogs among tiny bushes. In the middle there is a party with people dancing, wearing little leaf crowns and flowy clothes, they are the friends of Bacchus, the god of wine. Down near the foot there are little sea animals swimming among wavy lines. It is all decorated with leaves and has dark spots because it is very, very old and used to serve wine.

Up on the hunting band, what large feline chases deer and hares alongside the dogs?

    HintPista

It is not the male lion, it is his short-maned female companion running among the shrubs.

  2. #2

In the record's palette, what light metallic color describes the jar's body with golden glints?

    HintPista

It is the precious metal of luxury tableware, with a bright gray tone that darkens with patina.
