What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black and sepia ink on cream-colored paper, marked by intense contrast and restless linework. In the foreground at the bottom, two lions carved in relief on stone slabs stretch across the full width: the one on the right, seen in profile with a thick mane, firm legs, and curved tail, is clearly readable, while the one on the left remains half-buried in shadow, almost merging with rocks and rubble. Above them hang heavy knotted ropes like garlands, and on the left a chain descends diagonally from a central pulley. Rising beyond is an impossible architecture of Roman stone arches, vaults, piers, and walls of irregular blocks, layered across many levels. Wooden beams cut diagonally through space, supporting narrow bridges, stairs, and walkways, with tiny barred openings visible high above. Small human figures walk, pull ropes, bend down, or gather like prisoners; on the left, a larger group, including a cloaked figure seen from behind, gives human scale against the massive structure. At the center, a dark lantern stands out among luminous arches, and in the distance, amid scaffolding and stairways, still more constructions appear, offering no exit. Light enters in patches, while cross-hatching creates dust, dampness, and suffocating depth.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the two lions at the bottom and notice that they are not alive, but carved in relief. Then look for the tiny human figures on the bridges and stairs: their size makes the architecture feel overwhelming. Finally, try to trace a route from one arch to another; the space repeatedly seems to have no exit.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this etching was made by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italy, 1720-1778) between 1745 and 1750. It belongs to the world of his Imaginary Prisons, a group of prints devoted not to a documented real prison, but to invented interiors inspired by ancient Rome, its arches, vaults, and ruins. Piranesi, famous for his views of Rome, here exaggerates scale and multiplies bridges, chains, and beams until architecture becomes a threatening power. Not exactly which prison, if any, may have inspired it is known; it was probably conceived as a visual fantasy about confinement, authority, and the sublime.

Curious detailDato curioso

Piranesi later returned to the Imaginary Prisons and reissued them in 1761 in darker, more heavily worked versions, adding two plates to the original fourteen.

  1. What makes this space feel infinite even though it is enclosed?¿Qué hace que este espacio se sienta infinito aunque esté cerrado?
  2. If the lions are only stone reliefs, why do they add to the sense of threat?
  3. Who holds power in this prison: the guards, the prisoners, or the architecture itself?¿Quién ejerce el poder en esta cárcel: los guardias, los prisioneros o la propia arquitectura?

I focus on the contrast between the creamy paper and the intense black and sepia ink, with its nervous line. Notice how the crosshatching creates dust and dampness, and how light enters in patches between vaults and pillars made of irregular blocks. In the foreground, the relief of the two lions concerns me: the one on the right is still crisp with its dense mane and curved tail, but the one on the left sinks into shadow and stones, almost lost among rubble, chains and knotted ropes hanging like garlands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at it like a constellation made of stone. The Roman arches overlap in impossible levels, like orbits that never close, with diagonal wooden beams, narrow bridges and stairways leading nowhere. At the center, that dark lantern between luminous arches feels like an eclipsed sun barely lighting the tiny human figures pulling ropes. It is a universe with no exit, an oppressive gravity where architecture expands like an endless and suffocating cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This jail is huge and looks like a maze made of broken toys! Down below there are two stone lions lying down, one looks very clear with its fluffy mane and bent little tail, the other is hidden in the darkness. Up above there are lots of arches, tiny bridges and stairs that go nowhere. There are hanging ropes and a long chain, and very tiny people walking and pulling things. I feel that if I went in I would get lost among so many walls and shadows.

In the foreground, on stone slabs, what pair of sculpted animals in relief dominates the lower part of the print?

    HintPista

Look at the bottom, they fill the whole width; one is sharp in profile with a dense mane, the other hides in shadow.

What dark object hangs at the center between the luminous arches and barely lights the small figures?

    HintPista

Find it at the heart of the architecture, glowing amid gloom and arches.

Besides the chain going down diagonally on the left, what other thick knotted elements hang like a garland above the lions?

    HintPista

Look right above the lions, they fall with knots and soft curves.
