What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a creamy, almost ivory background with almost no shadow, a single plant is shown whole and near life-size, leaning slightly to the right. Its base reveals a small cluster of fleshy tubers in ochre and light brown, with extremely fine, thread-like rootlets spreading over the white of the paper. From there rise short stems wrapped in elongated sheaths of deep purple, almost aubergine, with reddish highlights. Two large leaves dominate the composition: broad, lance-shaped, with pointed tips and strongly marked parallel veins that create subtle ridges; the upper surface is a rich, satiny green while the underside and edges shift to that same dark purple, suggesting thickness and gentle curvature. Near the base, a delicate flower appears with soft petals in pale lilac and white, with long, drooping filaments. To the left, a light gray line drawing details the same flower spread open; to the right, three tiny numbered studies show the pistil and stamens. Below, elegant cursive script names the species in Latin and French, with small printed credits in the lower corners.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two large leaves and follow their veins to the green-purple contrast. Then move down to the tubers and roots; notice how fine the lines are. Finally compare the colored flower with the small linear diagrams beside it to see how art and science work together.
ContextContexto
This plate is from Les Liliacées, the monumental work by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), the French painter and botanist known as the Raphael of flowers. Published in Paris between 1802 and 1816, it contains over 460 plates of plants, many grown in the Malmaison gardens of Empress Joséphine Bonaparte. The technique is stipple and line engraving with hand coloring in watercolor, valued for both scientific precision and artistic delicacy. The plate depicts Kaempferia longa, now generally placed in the genus Kaempferia, in the ginger family Zingiberaceae. The Cleveland Museum of Art records confirm the authorship, date and technique, but provide no further description.

Curious detailDato curioso
Redouté refined stipple engraving to achieve soft tonal gradations without harsh lines, allowing hand-colorists to apply transparent watercolors that closely matched his originals, a breakthrough that made Les Liliacées a landmark of botanical illustration.

I pause on the creamy ivory paper, almost spotless, which has kept its tone for more than two hundred years. I notice the ochre tubers and the ultra-fine rootlets painted by hand in watercolor over the stipple engraving; every filament is still visible. The two large leaves show the satiny green sheen and the eggplant purple underside, a contrast hard to achieve. I am amazed that the calligraphy and the three tiny diagrams remain so crisp, preserving both science and elegance at once.

I see this plant like a system floating in the void of the paper, just like a constellation against the light background. The tubers at the base are the core, and the two large lance-shaped leaves open like orbits traced by parallel veins. The pale lilac and white flower with long filaments looks like a comet peeking near the ground. On the sides, the gray line drawings and the three numbered diagrams are like zoomed-in maps, helping us understand tiny details with the same patience used to watch the sky.

This plant looks like it is from another planet but it is real! At the bottom it has little ochre potatoes with hairs that are its roots. On top it has two giant leaves like elephant ears, green on top and purple underneath, with marked stripes. Near the ground a tiny lilac flower sprouts with hanging threads. On the side there are small drawings that explain its parts like a secret. I like that it is leaning, as if saying hello.
