What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single long sheet of creamy beige paper presented as two side-by-side drawings, representing the recto and verso of one study. On the left, The Feast of Herod unfolds around a draped table. At center, Salome in profile, with a fitted gown and pinned-up hair, holds a large charger bearing the severed head of Saint John the Baptist. To the right, Herod, wearing a bulky cap and enveloping mantle, leans back in horror, hands half-raised and body recoiling. Beside him Herodias smiles as she grips the platter with one hand and points toward it with a fork, a tiny chilling detail. Around the table are loosely sketched guests, vessels and plates, servants in the background, and loose pentimenti and scribbled corrections along the top edge. On the right, the Tomyris sketch is more crowded and agitated: the queen enthroned under a canopy, holding a scepter, watches servants on the ground handling the bloody head of Cyrus near a sack or bowl. The linework is rapid and overlapping, in brown pen with black and red chalk and touches of white gouache for highlights. Light is even and diffuse, texture is that of aged laid paper with stains, creases and uneven edges, giving a sense of immediacy and studio use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrasting gestures of Herod pulling back and Herodias leaning in with the small fork — that tension drives the scene. Look for the handwritten notes at the top and center, direct evidence of Rubens editing his design. Then compare the two sides: two stories of beheading and female retribution rendered with the same urgent, searching line.

ContextContexto

This is a preparatory sheet by Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish Baroque master (1577–1640), dated about 1637–38 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Rubens ran a large studio in Antwerp and used drawings to plan major paintings and instruct assistants. The left drawing is a study for The Feast of Herod now in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, capturing the moment Salome uncovers the charger. Rubens inscribed what is read as Herodias somewhat higher at the top. The right drawing is a sketch for Tomyris with the Head of Cyrus, a rare subject of a queen avenging her son, for which Rubens made two paintings now in Paris and Boston, inscribed plus spatij, meaning more space, in the center.

Curious detailDato curioso

Both sides preserve Rubens own handwritten compositional notes, Herodias somewhat higher on the Feast of Herod and plus spatij, more space, on the Tomyris sketch, showing his working process in ink.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your reading shift when you notice the fork before the head on the platter?¿Cómo cambia la historia si miras primero el tenedor de Herodías y no la cabeza en la bandeja?
  2. What connection do you see between pairing a biblical banquet and an ancient tale of revenge on one sheet?¿Qué te hace sentir que Rubens dibuje dos venganzas femeninas en el mismo papel, una bíblica y otra histórica?
  3. Where do quick ink strokes suggest fear, pleasure, or indifference among the figures?¿Dónde ves arrepentimiento, curiosidad o crueldad en los gestos rápidos de tinta?

If you look closely you will see this is not a finished artwork but a working sheet. The cream-beige paper is stained, with folds and uneven edges, and the brown ink shows corrections and loose strokes at the top. On the left the banquet is built with quick lines over the table with a tablecloth and the platter with the head. On the right the sketch is even more tentative, with black chalk and reddish and white touches to give volume under the canopy. I am interested in how Rubens rehearses gestures and space before painting.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What pulls me in is that there are two scenes on a single sheet, like an obverse and reverse unfolded side by side. On the left everything revolves around the table and the platter held by Salome, with Herod recoiling in his bulky cap and Herodias pointing with a fork, a tiny yet disturbing detail. On the right the action crowds under a canopy where Tomiris with a scepter watches servants on the ground with Cyrus head. Two revenges, two different choreographies of power facing each other.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a sheet with two brownish drawings made really fast. On the left there is a party with a long table and lots of blurry people. A lady in a tight dress carries a tray with a head and another lady grabs it with a fork, so weird! The man with the big hat leans back like he is scared. On the right there is a queen sitting on her throne with a long stick watching some helpers on the floor who are handling another head near a little bag. Everything is all scribbly.
