What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single page of an old, worn sketchbook, photographed against a dark background. The sheet is a pale, grayish blue, with a fine grain, small spots, creases near the top, and slightly frayed, yellowed edges. On the left, the thickness of the bound volume can be seen, with several aged leaves and a ragged spine; on the right, a narrow strip of the next page appears. At the lower left corner, the number 62 is faintly inscribed. In the upper center, occupying barely a quarter of the page, is a small study in black chalk with touches of white: the head, neck, shoulders, and upper back of a nude man seen from behind. The head is an almost empty oval, bald or very closely cropped, with two ears clearly projecting. Below it, the neck tightens and opens into a broad back built with short, crossed hatching. The left shoulder is more shaded, the right arm is suggested by a clean curved line, and the torso dissolves downward without a lower contour. The rest of the page is empty. A small dark hole near the top edge and faint stains emphasize the material fragility of the paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the disproportion: the figure occupies only a small area, yet the whole page seems to breathe around it. Then move from the almost empty head to the heavily worked back, and notice how the anatomy emerges without a complete contour. Finally, look at the worn edges of the sketchbook to remember that this was a working page, not a finished display piece.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is page 62 of the Verona Sketchbook, made in 1760 by Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787), an Italian artist. It belongs to the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, with credit to the John L. Severance Fund. The technique is black chalk with white heightening, a common resource in 18th-century life studies for modeling volume on toned paper. The drawing probably functioned as an anatomical exercise from behind, rather than as a finished work. The model's identity, the exact place of execution, and the study's later intended use are not known from the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: the head is barely a lightly drawn circle with two ears, while the neck and back concentrate almost all the shadow and effort — the artist was studying muscle, not the face.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why draw a body from behind, renouncing the face and any expression?¿Por qué dibujar un cuerpo de espaldas, renunciando al rostro y a toda expresión?
  2. How does the vast empty page change our perception of such a small figure?¿Cómo cambia el enorme vacío de la página nuestra percepción de una figura tan pequeña?
  3. What does the contrast between the unfinished head and the worked back reveal about what the artist wanted to learn?¿Qué revela el contraste entre la cabeza inacabada y la espalda trabajada sobre lo que el artista quería aprender?

I pause on the fragility of the support: that pale grayish blue with yellowed edges, the worn binding and the small hole near the top edge. Everything speaks of use and time. The drawing takes up only a quarter of the sheet; it is black charcoal with white heightening, short crosshatched strokes to model the neck, shoulders and back. What interests me is how the figure fades downward without closing: it is a study, not a finished work, and the emptiness of the page is also information we must preserve.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as a small night sky made of grayish blue paper. The back view figure is like a tiny constellation at the top: oval head, prominent ears, tense neck opening into a broad back. I like that it is unfinished and off-center, leaving a lot of emptiness, as if the artist saved space to keep observing. That number 62 in the lower left corner reminds me of cataloging stars: one page, one observation recorded in 1760 within a larger sketchbook.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a very old blue sheet with yellowish, slightly bent edges. Almost the whole page is empty and at the top there is a small drawing of a man without clothes seen from behind. You can only see his bald head with big ears, his neck and his back with shadows made of little lines. His body fades toward the bottom as if they did not finish it. I am curious about the little dark hole near the top and the small number 62 written in the corner. It feels like a half secret.
