Verona Sketchbook: Right leg (page 33)Cuaderno de Verona: Pierna derecha (página 33)

black chalk with white heightening
What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a full page from an open, bound sketchbook, photographed against a black background. The page occupies almost the entire frame, set slightly at an angle, with a narrow sliver of the facing page visible at the far left and the stacked, pale edges of other pages showing along the right and bottom. The paper is a warm, uneven tan-brown, with a fibrous, slightly rough texture: small white flecks, thin scratches, faint smudges, and worn, irregular edges, especially at the top corners and lower border. In the upper third of the page, drawn diagonally, is a single human leg, seen from around the thigh and knee down toward the foot. The knee and shin are the most defined part, built up with grainy white heightening that catches an implied light, while black chalk darkens the underside of the knee and models the shadow. As the leg descends toward the lower left, the line becomes progressively fainter and more broken, until the foot is barely a ghostly outline dissolving into the paper. The rest of the page - more than half of it - is completely empty. A small handwritten '33' appears at the bottom right corner, and a tiny, faint mark sits near the top center. The overall impression is quiet, fragile, and sparse: one emerging limb on a large field of aged, tinted paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large expanse of empty paper, then let your eye rise to the patch of white near the top. Follow the faint line downward until you almost lose the foot: that near-disappearance is what makes the study feel unfinished, like an idea being tested rather than a work being displayed.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is page 33 of the *Verona Sketchbook*, made in 1760 by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), using black chalk with white heightening. It belongs to a bound volume, so it was not conceived as an isolated, finished work, but as part of a working notebook. In the 18th century, artists commonly filled sketchbooks with anatomical studies - legs, hands, torsos - to practice volume, light, and movement before using them in larger compositions. The Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the piece through the John L. Severance Fund, does not state in the supplied data which final work, if any, this leg was preparing for. That remains unknown, and probably it was simply an exercise.

Curious detailDato curioso
The technique works in three tones at once: the brown paper itself provides the mid-tone, the black chalk carves out the shadows, and the white heightening adds the light - so the brightest part of the leg is literally placed on top of the paper, not left blank.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- Why study a single leg with such care if the page was probably never meant to be shown?¿Por qué estudiar una sola pierna con tanto cuidado si la página probablemente nunca iba a mostrarse?
- How does the huge empty space around the leg change the way you read it - as fragment, failure, or focus?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de la pierna —fragmento, fracaso o concentración— el enorme espacio vacío que la rodea?
- What does the choice to draw on tinted paper, adding both black and white, reveal about how the artist was thinking about light?¿Qué revela sobre la manera de pensar la luz la decisión de dibujar sobre papel teñido, agregando negro y blanco a la vez?

I pause on what the paper itself tells us. It is a warm, uneven brown with white specks, fine scratches, and worn edges, especially at the corners and along the bottom. The leg is drawn on a diagonal and only the knee and shin feel fully modeled, with granular white heightening for light and black charcoal for shadow. Toward the foot the line turns ghostly and dissolves. I love that vast emptiness: the drawing breathes and the wear becomes part of the work.

I see this leg as an incomplete constellation. The knee and shin shine like well-defined stars thanks to the white heightening, while the foot is just a broken, sketchy line that fades away like a dimming star. The rest of the page is a vast empty sky of brown paper that lets that single form float. The handwritten 33 at the bottom right feels like its coordinate. It is silent and fragile, an apparition emerging alone in immensity.

There is only one leg! It lies on a diagonal and looks like it is vanishing like a ghost. Up near the knee it looks very bright and strong with white and black, but if you follow toward the foot you can barely see it, just a super light sketchy line. The paper is cookie-brown and a little spotty and old. I like that the rest of the sheet is empty, as if the leg were floating all by itself. At the bottom there is a tiny little number 33.
