What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal sketchbook page in creamy, slightly age-toned paper, photographed from above with the stitched binding visible at the bottom and the bulk of pages at the top edge. In the upper center floats a quick, loose graphite sketch, gestural and almost abstract. Long horizontal shaded strokes suggest a shoreline or calm water, with a denser, darker block on the lower right that anchors the composition. Above that band, clustered irregular, curling, broken lines pile up to hint at the bushy canopies of willows or low trees; the line is light, nervous, and open, leaving much of the paper's white breathing around it. Higher still, two elongated, soft cloud-like scribbles stretch across the sky, conveying wind and atmosphere. In the lower half, centered and handwritten in fluid cursive graphite, the inscription reads 'salem willows'. The light is even and flat, revealing the matte, slightly porous texture of the paper and the subtle grain of the pencil. The scale is intimate, a field note, with generous empty space that feels airy, quiet, and provisional.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the empty paper first, then let your eye settle on the darker horizontal smudge at the bottom that grounds the sketch. Follow the horizontal sweep of water and clouds and pause on the tangled center scribbles where a few curls become foliage. End on the handwritten caption below, which turns an abstract mark into a named place.

ContextContexto

This page is part of a sketchbook containing 59 graphite drawings and 16 watercolors by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland and active in Boston, Paris and New York. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was made around 1919–1921 at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, although this sheet is inscribed 'Salem Willows', probably referring to Salem Willows Park, a popular coastal park nearby. The medium is graphite on paper. The sketchbook entered the collection as a gift from Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. No further specific details about this page are given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Prendergast, celebrated for his highly colorful watercolors of leisure scenes, relied on small, rapid graphite field sketches like this one as visual memory aids for larger studio compositions.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at how fragile this page is: a creamy paper now slightly yellowed at the edges, porous and matte, that has preserved this quick graphite gesture from around 1919 to 1921. Notice how the stroke never fully closes, it breathes and leaves a lot of white space, typical of a field sketch. The handwritten note salem willows, centered below, is key, it is the memory of the place made by hand. As a conservator I also read the even light and low contrast as signs of an intimate drawing meant to be kept inside a sketchbook of 59 graphite drawings and 16 watercolors.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me most are those two soft bands at the top, the sketched clouds crossing the sky with just a few lines. They are the weather of the place, the coastal wind of Cape Ann in Massachusetts, noted around 1919. Below, the dark horizontal band makes me think of calm water or a shoreline reflecting light. Everything is suggested, not described, as if Prendergast wanted to capture a moment of atmosphere before it changed. And that emptiness of the creamy paper is also sky, air, a pause.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew very quickly with a pencil while outside, like when I make scribbles of trees that do not close. At the top there are two lying-down clouds that look like stretched cotton, and below a dark blot that could be a big rock by the water. In the middle, the trees are like tangled mops made with lots of little lines. I like that he left so much white space, as if the paper were breathing. And he wrote salem willows in pretty little handwriting, right in the middle, like a secret.
