lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
In the left foreground a bulky, caricatured military officer dominates the scene, shown in three-quarter view with his hands crossed over his belly. He wears a tall spiked helmet with a plume, broad epaulettes, a tight tunic with shoulder straps and a sash, light trousers and tall boots; a long sabre hangs at his side and casts an elongated shadow across the ground. His face is drawn with heavy lines, moustache and pronounced jowl, gazing disdainfully to the right. In the middle ground to the right, a group of three hunched, thin figures carries huge sacks marked 1000 over their shoulders; one of them appears as a skull or cadaverous face, another wears a soft cap and dark cloak. Their gestures convey pleading or alarm, with raised hands and leaning bodies. In the blurred background, a smaller figure runs or flees. The work is a black-and-white lithograph with nervous hatching, greasy crayon shading and a yellowed aged paper texture. The composition leaves an empty center that emphasizes the contrast in scale between the imposing soldier and the tiny, fearful civilians. At the bottom there is handwritten text and a signature H.D. on the left, and the number 71 at the top right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the striking contrast in size and bulk between the solid officer and the fragile group on the right. Then follow the direction of the gazes and the sacks marked 1000 to grasp the transaction. Finally look at the trailing sabre and the tiny figure in the background, which heighten the sense of intimidation.
ContextContexto
Lithograph by Honoré Daumier (French, 1808–1879), published in the satirical newspaper Le Charivari on June 17, 1854 as plate 71 of the series Actualités, or News of the Day, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. Printed by Destouches and distributed by Martinet in Paris. Daumier was one of the most prolific political caricaturists in 19th-century France, known for criticizing the monarchy, the Second Empire, and the military and bourgeois establishment through illustrated press. The French caption at the bottom suggests someone complaining that his money is being taken with little resistance and that he has made a bad deal, probably a satire on military intervention or mercenary politics, though the source does not specify the exact episode.

I focus on the yellowed paper and the greasy crayon strokes of this black and white lithograph from 1854. Published in Le Charivari as plate 71 of Actualités, it keeps the H.D. signature and the numbering at the top right. I notice the scale contrast: the helmeted soldier with the pointed top casts a long shadow from his saber, while the three hunched figures carry sacks marked with 1000. The empty center is deliberate and the nervous shading highlights the tension between power and vulnerability.

I see this scene as an eclipse of power. The bulky soldier on the left is like a giant planet dominating the orbit, with his pointed helmet and epaulettes like craters of authority. On the right, three small hunched figures carrying sacks marked 1000 look like fearful satellites about to be absorbed. The central void is outer space separating oppressor from oppressed and the long shadow of the saber marks the time of a satire about money and militarism.

This military man looks huge and grumpy! He has a pointy helmet, a mustache, a big belly and a super long saber that makes a shadow on the ground. He makes me giggle a little but I also feel sorry because he looks mean. On the other side there are three tiny people carrying sacks that say 1000 and they look tired and scared, one even looks like a little skull. Why is the big guy taking their sacks? The drawing is black and white and looks old like yellow paper.

If you count carefully, how many hunched figures carry sacks marked with the number 1000 to the right of the soldier?
HintPista
Look at the middle ground on the right, they are tiny compared to the soldier and all carry the same weight on their shoulders.

It is a thin weapon worn at the waist of the uniform and its shadow crosses the central void.
