What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a smooth, gradient gray background, a cast gold pendant in the form of a highly stylized bird faces forward. The vertical body is compact, with a small suspension loop at the top. The elongated head bears a strong hooked beak curving downward; flanking the head are two symmetrical tufts that on close inspection are crocodiles in profile, with open jaws and spiral eyes. Broad, flat, sickle-shaped wings extend from the central torso, their thin sheet-like edges slightly uneven and mottled with darker tarnish and subtle scratches. The talons are modeled in relief at the center and appear to clutch a form. Below, a long forked tail spreads into an inverted Y with two straight-ended rectangular arms. The gold surface is burnished but matte in places, showing warm yellow tones shifting to deeper brownish patches, pitting, and soft highlights from frontal lighting that emphasizes the beak, claws, and the tiny crocodile heads. The object reads as small-scale pectoral jewelry, almost perfectly symmetrical and designed to be seen from the front.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bold Y-shaped tail and sickle wings to grasp the overall geometry. Then move up to the hooked beak and pause on the two tiny crocodiles framing the head, the detail that turns a simple bird into a composite, symbolic creature.
ContextContexto
This pendant is attributed to the Diquís region of Costa Rica or Panama, dated to about 1000–1550 CE, made by cast gold and classified as Metalwork in the Art of the Americas department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Source information notes that pendants with birds like this were called aguilas, or eagles, by Christopher Columbus, who saw Indigenous people wearing them as necklace ornaments. Modern scholars debate the species depicted, though some interpret it as a bird of prey because of the prominent beak and talons, sometimes clutching an object. In this example, two crocodile-profile tufts flank the bird’s head. The maker and exact find context are not known.

This golden pendant fascinates me because of how well the cast gold has been preserved. Notice the matte and burnished tone with dark patina spots and tiny pits, that tells its age between 1000 and 1550 CE. The symmetry is almost total and the relief of the hooked beak and the claws is beautifully modeled by the light. I focus on the tubular loop on top for suspension and on the sickle-shaped wings and the Y-shaped bifurcated tail, all in a flat and compact sheet.

I see this stylized bird facing forward like a symmetrical constellation against the gray background. Its vertical body is the central axis, with two wide crescent-shaped wings spread as if gliding. I am intrigued by the long inverted Y-shaped tail that looks like a downward arrow and the elongated head with a curved beak like a celestial hook. On either side of the head, two symmetrical crests reveal crocodiles in profile with open snouts and spiral eyes, small universes inside another.

This golden bird looks like a superhero with giant wings! It has a curved beak like a hook and marked claws holding something mysterious. The funniest part is that on its little head it has two tiny crocodiles on the sides, one on the left and one on the right, with spiral eyes and open mouths. It has a little Y-shaped tail like scissors and a small loop on top to hang it like a necklace. It shines a lot even though it has dark little spots.
