What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a neutral gray studio background, a globular pharmacy bottle with a tall, narrow neck and flared mouth dominates the view under soft, even lighting. The tin-glazed earthenware has a glossy, opaque white surface with a slightly footed base and a worn rim that reveals the pale buff clay beneath. In the foreground, across the bulbous belly, a banded label reads CAPILLV in bold black capitals, framed by thin ochre lines and scrolling foliate borders in cobalt blue, green and burnt orange below. Above the inscription, a stylized greyhound is captured mid-leap within an undulating cartouche; its coat is white with smoky blue shading, its muzzle elongated, ears pricked, and a striped yellow collar around its neck, legs stretched over a narrow ground suggested by washes of green, ochre and light blue dotted with tiny black specks. The neck is decorated with a geometric pattern of alternating flame-like leaves in blue, green and ochre outlined in dark manganese. The brushwork is lively and hand-painted, with dark outlines, small glaze pinholes and a slight craquelure that catches the light, conveying age and handmade character.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bold CAPILLV lettering and the leaping hound just above it, then trace the round silhouette from base to neck. Notice how the vertical leaf pattern on the neck contrasts with the horizontal movement of the dog. Look closely at the rim wear and the dotted grass, small signs of both daily use and the painter’s quick hand.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a tin-glazed earthenware pharmacy bottle, or maiolica, made around 1500–1510 in Faenza, in the Papal States, Italy. Such bottles lined the shelves of Renaissance apothecary shops and held medicinal herbs, spices and ointments. The inscription CAPILLV identifies the contents as maidenhair water, a liquid distilled from a fern-like plant commonly called maidenhair fern, used at the time for medicinal purposes. Faenza was a leading center for maiolica in the early Renaissance, known for its opaque white glaze and vivid palette of cobalt, green and ochre, and for naturalistic animal decoration like the hound shown here.

Curious detailDato curioso
Faenza gave its name to the word faience for tin-glazed pottery, and its maiolica was so prized that pharmacy jars like this combined practical labeling with elaborate painting to signal the apothecary’s status and care.

When I look closely at this bottle from Faenza I think about the enamel work. That bright opaque white is tin glaze and here it looks alive, with fine crackle and small imperfections. I pause at the flared mouth where the glaze has worn away to reveal the pale clay underneath, and at the cartouche with CAPILLV outlined in black. The borders in cobalt blue, green and orangey ochre show a loose and expressive brushstroke that I value as the workshop's fingerprint from 1500.

This bottle makes me think of apothecary constellations. Like a star chart, it once lined Renaissance shelves alongside other vessels and its CAPILLV label helped navigate among remedies. I love the white greyhound with the yellow collar running over that strip dotted with black specks, as if chasing a star. The neck with alternating leaves in blue, green and ochre looks like a decorated orbit. It is an everyday object that, like an old telescope, brings us closer to how health was understood five centuries ago.

This bottle looks like it belongs in a fairy tale and it has a little dog running on it. It is a white greyhound with pointy ears and a striped yellow collar caught mid leap. Above the dog there are little plants and below it says CAPILLV in big black letters. I like the neck with leaf doodles in blue, green and ochre, and the wavy colorful borders. I imagine it held magic water from a plant called maidenhair and that the dog was guarding the bottle so no one would drink it.
