It fills almost the full height of the frame. Its surface is finely molded in low relief, not painted. In the upper third, water is rendered with delicate horizontal wavy lines suggesting ripples, with four tiny pavilion-like structures or lanterns floating on the lake. Below, in the middle section, traditional Chinese architecture appears: a house with a curved tile roof and a round window at the water's edge, and further back, two more pavilions nestled among weeping willows with finely incised drooping branches. The foliage is carved with thread-like strokes that contrast with the clearly marked roof tiles. In the lower third, another cluster of willows leans over a rocky bank and water reappears with parallel rippled grooves. A smooth raised rim frames the whole scene like a medallion. Lighting is even and soft, revealing a matte, slightly velvety texture of compressed ink with no shine. Small reddish speckles at the base and side hint at wear or underlying pigment. The scale suggests a hand-held, precious miniature made for close looking.","contexto":"This is one of ten ink cakes of different shapes and colors stored in a lacquer box, imperially commissioned during the Qianlong reign around 1780-1794 in the Qing dynasty. Each cake is inscribed in gold with a poem by the Qianlong emperor praising one of the Ten Famous Sights of West Lake in Hangzhou, near Shanghai. West Lake was celebrated for its natural beauty and was a favorite imperial destination; it remains a major landmark today. Ink cakes are normally ground with water on an inkstone to make liquid ink for calligraphy and painting, but this luxurious commemorative set was never used and was preserved as a collector's object.","como_mirarla":"First trace the trilobed outer edge, then move into the center and follow the water from top to bottom. Pause on the four small islets or lanterns on the lake and on the fine willow branches that show the mold's precision. Notice how the raised border turns the landscape into a miniature painting meant to be held in the hand.","dato_curioso":"Though they look like blue sculptures, these sticks are real solid ink made of compressed soot and pigment; when rubbed with water on an inkstone they dissolve into usable writing ink, though this example was never ground for use.","preguntas":["How does it change your view to know this detailed landscape was made to be dissolved into ink?","What connection do you see between the imperial poem on the reverse and the carved lake scene?","Why would an emperor choose to commemorate a natural landscape on such a small, luxurious object?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Barra de tinta azul con paisaje del Lago del Oeste, encargo imperial Qianlong","se_ve":"La pieza es una barra de tinta vertical de contorno trilobulado, como tres óvalos unidos, de un azul profundo casi negro azulado, fotografiada centrada sobre un fondo gris neutro degradado.
