What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, set against a softly graduated background from light gray to deep black, stands a tall, slender, transparent crystal candy jar photographed frontally with lighting that emphasizes its brilliance. The vessel has an elongated, inverted V-shaped bowl that tapers gently toward the bottom and rests on a short, flared, faceted foot with a ribbed knop at the center. Near the base of the bowl, a band of vertical cut flutes catches the light and creates delicate shadows. The rim is smooth and encircled by two fine beaded relief bands around the mouth. A tall, conical lid sits on top, with soft shoulders and vertical ribs converging toward the center. The lid culminates in a pointed finial resembling an acorn or spire, with a decorated collar and carved detail just below the tip. The glass is completely colorless, with a highly polished surface and crisp edges, showing bright highlights along the rim and clear transparency that reveals the background through the body. The scale suggests a display piece, about 30 to 40 centimeters high, elegant and perfectly symmetrical, shown empty without contents.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette, the elegant V rising from the foot to the pointed lid. Then follow the light and notice how the cut flutes at the base and the beaded rim break up reflections. Finally focus on the small finial, a finely worked detail that crowns the whole composition.

ContextContexto

This crystal candy jar was made in the United States between 1869 and 1880 by Christian Dorflinger (1828–1915), a German-born glassmaker regarded as one of America’s leading producers of luxury cut crystal in the 19th century. The Cleveland Museum of Art records it in the Decorative Art and Design department under the Glass category, with credit noting it was given in memory of Christian Dorflinger by his daughter Carlotta Dorflinger Atkinson. No extended museum description is provided, but its covered footed form is typical of candy or confection containers used in affluent Victorian-era domestic interiors.

I pause to see how light moves across this cut crystal bonbonniere made between 1869 and 1880 by Christian Dorflinger. I notice the frieze of vertical gadroons near the faceted foot and the two fine beaded relief bands below the smooth rim. The conical lid with ribs and its pointed finial concentrates the polishing and sharp edges. It is an example of Victorian decorative arts in the United States, intended for sweets, that we preserve today for its transparency and symmetry.

I see this bonbonniere as a small observatory for light. Its inverted V shape on a flared foot looks like an old telescope pointing upward. The colorless polished crystal catches bright reflections, just as a lens captures stars, and lets the background show through the body. The tall conical lid with a pointed finial reminds me of a dome. Between 1869 and 1880, this Victorian domestic luxury object held sweets, but today it makes me think about how transparency also helps us look beyond.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant crystal ice cream that never melts. It has a tall V-shaped cup form and a very high lid with a little tip on top like an acorn. Down near the foot it has small lobes that sparkle in the light and up top two little bracelets of beads around the mouth. It is transparent and lets you see what is behind it. I imagine that between 1869 and 1880 people filled it with candies and had to lift the lid carefully to grab one without breaking anything.
