What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical print on aged beige paper, with slightly irregular edges and a surface marked by faint scratches, specks, and very thin lines. In the upper center, leaning toward the right, appears a single dark figure shown in strict profile, occupying roughly the middle third of the sheet and surrounded by a large amount of empty space. It is a small horned devil or grotesque creature, crouching and curled in on itself. Its head, with a pointed ear or horn, a prominent nose, and a downturned mouth, bows forward. From its back and shoulders emerge scrolls and volutes like those of an architectural bracket or piece of carved furniture, blending body and ornament. One very long, thin arm descends along its side, ending in a slender hand resting near its bent knee. Its legs are folded tightly, with muscular thighs, marked knees, and elongated feet that taper downward to a point, as if the figure ended in a support or finial. Intense black shading models the torso, limbs, and curls, while fine parallel lines create intermediate grays. A solid shadow falls to the left, doubling the silhouette. At lower right is a small signature; along the bottom margin are handwritten inscriptions, a stamp, and numbers, partly cropped or faded.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the curved silhouette from the horns down to the pointed lower tip, as if tracing a question mark. Then look at the face in profile and the long hand resting on the knee: the creature seems less threatening than tired or watchful. Finally, notice the dense shadow on the left, which almost creates a second figure.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is *The Little Devil of Florence* (1907), an etching and drypoint print by British artist David Young Cameron (1865–1945), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the Bequest of James Parmelee. Cameron worked during the revival of original etching in Britain, when artists valued expressive line and tonal effects made directly on the copper plate. The title places the motif in Florence, but the source provides no description, so the exact sculpture, building, or object that inspired the figure is not known. It probably reproduces or reimagines an architectural or decorative grotesque seen in that city.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail is that the black shadow cast to the left does not merely provide background: it thickens the figure's outline and makes the devil look carved from wood or stone, suspended on an invisible wall.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Does this devil seem frightening, melancholic, or protective, and which lines or gestures shape that impression?¿Este diablillo parece temible, melancólico o protector, y qué trazos o gestos producen esa impresión?
  2. How does the reading change when the figure is understood as architecture or furniture rather than as a living body?¿Cómo cambia la lectura si la figura se entiende como parte de una arquitectura o de un mueble, y no como un cuerpo vivo?
  3. Why might an artist leave so much empty paper around such a dark, detailed figure?¿Por qué un artista dejaría tanto papel vacío alrededor de una figura tan oscura y detallada?

If you get close with a magnifying glass you will see why this print fascinates me: the aged beige paper is full of tiny streaks and specks that reveal its age and the work on the copper plate with etching and drypoint. The intense black models the little devil’s body and the fine hatching creates soft grays that give volume to muscles and scrolls. I pause at the large empty space surrounding the tilted figure, at its compact shadow to the left and at the inscriptions, the small signature and the stamp on the lower margin, traces of its history at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This little devil reminds me of a lonely constellation in a huge sky. It is tilted to the right, huddled into itself in the upper center of the sheet, surrounded by a lot of emptiness like an isolated planet. Its compact shadow to the left looks like an eclipse duplicating its silhouette. The scrolls coming from its back are like orbits or spiral nebulae that blur body and ornament. Intense black and hatched grays give it relief, like lunar light and half-shadow, as it floats cut out against the beige paper.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a naughty little monster curled into a ball! It has pointy horns, a big nose and a sad mouth curving down, and it is in profile looking to the right. Its arm is super long and skinny and its hand almost touches its bent knee. Its feet end in a tiny point as if it were the leg of a fancy table. Lots of snail-like curls come out of its back and hug it. It is all alone in the middle of a big beige sheet and casts a black shadow below. It is tiny but a little scary and funny at the same time.
