What you would seeLo que verías

A single silver drinking cup stands at the center of the image, photographed against a smooth background that fades from near-black at the top to light gray below. The vessel has a baluster shape: a wide, slightly flared mouth with a thin molded rim, sides that narrow gently below the lip, then swell into a rounded, pear-like belly before curving in to a stepped, circular foot. The polished metal is no longer bright; it carries a soft, cloudy patina of warm gray, beige, and faint golden-brown, with darker tarnish in the recesses and subtle uneven reflections that suggest light hand-hammering and long use. On the front, roughly at mid-height, an engraved monogram of large, intertwined script letters is decorated with curling vines and small leaves; its fine lines catch the light differently from the surrounding surface. The handle is almost entirely hidden behind the cup, visible only as a small ridged, leaf-shaped thumbpiece rising just above the back rim. The interior, seen at an angle, is smooth and pale. The object casts a faint, soft shadow on the flat gray ground, and its scale is ambiguous without a hand or other object for reference.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the silhouette, from the flared lip to the narrow waist and rounded belly. Then move closer to the engraved monogram, where the decoration interrupts the plain silver. Finally, notice the small leaf-shaped element peeking above the rim: it reveals that a much larger feature, the handle, remains hidden from this view.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this cann was made around 1778 by Zachariah Brigden (1734–1787), a silversmith from Boston, Massachusetts. The museum explains that "cann" is an old term for a drinking cup with a handle. In eighteenth-century America, silver vessels of this kind combined everyday use with social prestige: they held a drink, but their material and workmanship also displayed the owner's standing. The engraved monogram probably identifies an owner, though the source does not say who it was and the intertwined letters are hard to read in the photograph. It was given to the museum by Hollis French.

Curious detailDato curioso

From the front, the handle that defines a cann is almost entirely hidden behind the body; only its small leaf-decorated top rises above the rim, like a tiny fin.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Whose hands and gatherings might this cup have passed through, and how would its meaning change when it moved from a table to a museum case?¿Por qué manos y reuniones habrá pasado esta copa, y cómo cambia su sentido al pasar de una mesa a una vitrina de museo?
  2. Why hide the handle in the photograph, and what does that choice make you notice instead?¿Por qué ocultar el asa en la fotografía, y qué nos obliga a mirar esa elección en su lugar?
  3. What does an engraved monogram add to a plain object: decoration, ownership, memory, or all three?¿Qué le añade un monograma grabado a un objeto liso: decoración, propiedad, memoria, o las tres cosas?

I linger on that warm patina that no longer tries to shine, those cloudy grays and golden beiges that darken in the recessed areas of the metal. I see the irregular hammer marks under the polish and the molded rim that still keeps its fine edge. The intertwined monogram, with its little curling stems, is engraved with a different line that catches the light differently. I am struck by how the channeled leaf-shaped handle barely peeks from behind, as if trying not to interrupt the pear-shaped belly.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This cup reminds me of a small planet photographed against the void, with its background fading from deep black to pale gray like a horizon. Its baluster shape, with an open mouth and rounded belly on a stepped foot, has a serene geometry that seems to orbit above its faint shadow. The polish reflects light unevenly, like a lunar surface marked by use. That engraved monogram on the front is like a constellation that is hard to decipher, made of fine lines that shine differently.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little treasure cup with a pear-shaped belly and a tiny stepped foot to stand up straight. Its color is not shiny silver but like gray with honey and a bit of brown, and it looks a little smudgy from all the years it has been used. On the front it has tangled letters with little leaves that I cannot read but look fancy. Its tiny handle is playing hide and seek! You can only see a little leaf piece behind the rim. Inside it is smooth and pale and it casts a small shadow on the floor.
