Working Woman with Blue Shawl, from 1903, is a color lithograph by German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. I pause to look at how this 1903 color lithograph is made. That almost black background, a very deep green, is not flat: it looks grainy and matte, made with a lithographic crayon. I notice the cream paper with wide margins and the central image with rounded, irregular corners, as if emerging from darkness. The light touching the forehead, nose and chin is built with reserved paper and fine hatching. The blue shawl is the only breathing color, with uneven mottled washes, very fragile, and that is why we work to keep it stable.

The lady looks tired and looks down, like my mom when she comes home late from work. She is not smiling, her mouth is small and closed and her eyebrows are a little furrowed. Her hair is light beige, parted in the middle and pulled back. What I like most is her blue shawl, because it is the only pretty color in all that darkness. The background is almost black and there is nothing else, just her. I feel she wants to be quiet and that we should let her rest a little.
