A young soldier stands to the right, calmly thrusting his right hand into the fire; he wears a muscled cuirass with floral shoulder plates, a short pleated skirt, greaves, and a curved sword at his waist, his left hand resting on his hip in a pose of composure. To the left, an aged king seated on a throne whose armrest ends in a winged sphinx watches in astonishment, while beside him a crowned attendant grips a bundle of upright spears that converge toward the brazier. Behind the hero, a tight group of bearded soldiers in helmets stares at the ordeal with tension. The background opens onto a landscape: rolling hills, a walled town in the distance and, to the right, a military encampment with tents and a gnarled, leafless tree draped with moss. To the left hangs a heavy draped curtain. The print is executed in black and greenish gray ink, with dense cross-hatching and chiaroscuro contrasts that model drapery, metal armor and anatomy. The composition is crowded, theatrical and packed with minute ornamental details.","contexto":"This chiaroscuro woodcut in two blocks in greenish gray and black was printed in 1608 by Andrea Andreani after a drawing by Baldassarre Peruzzi, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It shows Gaius Mucius Cordus, the Roman youth who, according to legend dated to about 509 BC, saved Rome from the siege of the Etruscan king Lars Porsena. Caught while trying to assassinate the king in his camp, Mucius thrust his hand into a sacrificial fire to prove his bravery and endurance without showing pain. For this act he earned the nickname Scaevola, meaning left-handed, and was freed by his impressed enemy.","como_mirarla":"Start with the hand in the flames and the youth's steady face, then contrast his calm with the startled reaction of the seated king. Notice the richly decorated brazier and how the vertical spears frame the central action against the busy group of soldiers and the distant landscape.","dato_curioso":"Chiaroscuro woodcut achieves light and shadow by printing from multiple woodblocks inked in different tones; here Andreani used just two to create volume, reusing a design by Peruzzi made nearly a century earlier.","preguntas":["What does the contrast between Mucius's serenity and the agitation of the onlookers convey?","How does attention to the luxurious brazier and throne versus the spare camp in the background shift the meaning of the scene?","What ideas of heroism and patriotism does a legend of voluntary self-harm raise for viewers today?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Mucio Escévola ante el fuego, grabado en claroscuro","se_ve":"En primer plano, al centro, un brasero cilíndrico ricamente ornamentado con guirnaldas, máscaras y un escudo ovalado sostiene llamas vivas. I focus on the two-block printing in black and greyish green.
