'They Are Burning Everything — They Must Be About to Retreat'«Están quemando todo — deben estar por retirarse»
Jean Louis Forain (French, 1852–1931) · c. 1919 · France, 20th century
black crayon and black wash heightened with white gouache
What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground on a hill overlooking a village, two women flee crouching toward the left. One, with long dark hair streaming in the wind, carries an older woman on her back; the carried figure is wrapped in dark clothing and her pale face turns outward toward the viewer. Both wear light dresses and dark shoes, their leaning bodies conveying urgency and exhaustion. The drawing is executed in nervous black crayon and wash with touches of white gouache highlighting shoulders, legs and hair. At center and to the right, an enormous cloud of black smoke unfurls in dense, swirling volutes that occupy almost the upper half of the composition, dotted with small sparks. Beneath the smoke a hamlet of low houses with chimneys is sketched with rapid shading. At the far right, seen from behind, a soldier in a light uniform and kepi runs away holding a flaming torch, a tiny but decisive gesture. The background is nearly empty beige paper, which heightens the dramatic contrast between the dark smoke, the light figures and the threatening silhouette of the arsonist. The signature Forain appears at lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow first the diagonal flight of the two women to the left, then let the smoke pull your eye to the right. Pause on the soldier's small torch: that detail turns the abstract smoke into a deliberate human act.
ContextContexto
Work by French artist Jean Louis Forain (1852–1931), dated around 1919 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a drawing in black crayon and black wash heightened with white gouache. The title refers to scorched-earth tactics during a troop retreat, a recurring subject in Forain's graphic production about World War I. With no further information in the source record, the scene likely comments on the destruction of French villages by the retreating German army. Forain, known as a satirical illustrator, produced many critical wartime images during and just after the conflict.

Jean Louis Forain, admired by Degas, produced nearly a thousand war drawings for the press; this rapid, expressive stroke is typical of his work as a graphic chronicler of the front, intended for reproduction as prints.

I focus on how the contrast is built: the beige paper stays almost bare while black charcoal forms that huge cloud of smoke in dense swirls. I notice the touches of white gouache highlighting the shoulders, legs and hair of the two women fleeing crouched toward the left. The line is nervous and quick, typical of crayon and wash. At the lower right I see the Forain signature and, at the far edge, the small figure of the soldier with a torch.

What strikes me most is that black cloud taking up almost the upper half, like a broken sky. Its swirling volutes and scattered sparks remind me of an inverted constellation, dark and threatening, covering the village of low houses. Below, the two light figures look like two shooting stars trying to escape its shadow. The soldier seen from behind with a kepi walking away with the torch is just a dot, but he explains the source of all that darkness.

I see two women running very crouched over a hill and one carries the other on her back, like when you play piggyback but here they look very tired. They wear light dresses and dark shoes and their hair blows in the wind. Behind them there is a huge amount of black smoke shaped like a giant cloud coming from the little village. On the far right there is a tiny soldier running away with a lit torch and that feels a bit scary.
