What you would seeLo que verías

Inside a tall oval with a thin double border, a semi-nude female figure sits on a low rock beside a leafy tree and dominates the center. Her torso is turned three-quarters, bare-breasted, with a sheer cloth barely covering hips and thighs and billowing to the right in sharp, shaded folds. She wears a wreath of leaves and curling vines in her curly hair. Her left arm rises above her head holding a cluster of fruit, while her right arm reaches down toward a cornucopia overflowing with grapes, apples and gourds leaning against the trunk. The skin is rendered with fine hatching and washes in sepia, cream and dark brown, typical of chiaroscuro. Behind her, a wooded landscape recedes in perspective: dense treetops, a winding river and soft clouds under warm, diffused light. In the foreground at her feet lie two small fallen fruits and a few leaves on grassy ground drawn with short, crisp strokes. Texture combines the velvety grain of flat tone blocks with precise engraved lines, giving volume, light and a sense of gentle motion to the whole composition.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central figure and follow the arc of her arms linking the fruit above to the harvest below. Pause on the windblown drapery and how three inks alone model light and shadow. Finally notice the tiny still life at her feet and the miniature landscape beyond, which turns the oval into a complete world.

ContextContexto

Source data identifies the work as Proserpine from the series The Deities by Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558–1617), dated about 1588–90, executed as a chiaroscuro woodcut and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles W. Harkness Endowment Fund. Goltzius was a leading printmaker and draftsman of Northern Mannerism, celebrated for technical brilliance and for translating Italian models for northern audiences. Chiaroscuro woodcut uses multiple blocks inked in different tones to create light and volume. Proserpine, Roman goddess of spring and queen of the underworld in classical myth, is linked to fertility, harvest and seasonal renewal, which explains the profusion of fruits and foliage surrounding her in the print.

Curious detailDato curioso

Chiaroscuro woodcut does not rely on black ink alone: this print builds its highlights and shadows by overlaying woodblocks inked in ochre and brown tones, mimicking the look of a wash drawing.

This Proserpina captivates me for its technique. It is a chiaroscuro woodcut by Hendrick Goltzius from around 1588-1590, made with several blocks inked in sepia, cream and dark brown tones. Notice the oval with double border, the velvety grain of flat ink and the fine hatching that shapes the skin and the angular folds of the draped cloth. The warm light is achieved by layering inks, creating volume without color. It is Nordic mannerist virtuosity mimicking painterly effects with ink alone.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at her and think of cycles. Proserpina is goddess of spring and queen of the underworld, a myth of time that comes and goes like the seasons. Here Goltzius surrounds her with abundance to tell it: a cornucopia with grapes, apples and pumpkins, the bunch of fruit held high and the fallen fruits at her feet. Behind, the winding river and forest open in perspective under diffuse light. Everything speaks of fertility and harvests, of the year turning between shadow and light, between confinement and rebirth.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She is sitting on a little rock next to a really big tree and it looks like the wind is blowing her little cloth. She wears a tiny crown of leaves and she is pretending to be the queen of fruits. With one hand she lifts a bunch of fruit and with the other she touches a magic basket that never empties, full of grapes and pumpkins. Two little fruits fell at her feet. Behind there is a stream and lots of trees. I like it because it feels like a whole garden she takes care of.
