What you would seeLo que verías
Four long, narrow horizontal textile strips are arranged one above another, evenly spaced, on a plain ivory cloth background. Each fragment spans almost the full width. Its upper part is a decorated band and its lower part a strip of plain golden-beige or ochre fabric, unraveling into irregular fringes of different lengths. The decoration repeats a continuous geometric motif of stepped triangles and interlocking diagonals, like zigzags biting into one another, in very dark brown, almost black, faded reddish pink, and grayish white. Two thin dark and ochre lines frame the band above and below. The weave looks fine, flat, and slightly rough. Edges show breaks, loose threads, small losses, and worn areas, most visibly in the second strip from the top, which has a pale missing patch left of center. The first and fourth strips look more complete, while the middle ones have more uneven ends. Light is even and soft, with no strong shadows, emphasizing the contrast between the crisp pattern and the fuzzy, fibrous lower edge. At the scale of the image, these seem like fragile fragments mounted for preservation, not complete garments.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow one strip from left to right and notice how the triangles lock together without a break. Then compare the four strips: the pattern repeats, but the wear, losses, and fringe differ. That contrast between an orderly design and deteriorated material changes the reading of the set.
ContextContexto
According to its source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is *Four Border Strips*, by an unknown maker, dated to around 1100–1400 and attributed to the Chancay culture of Peru's central coast; its record also describes it as 12th to 15th century. The strips are cotton, made in a technique described as plain compound cloth. The Chancay developed on the central Andean coast before their incorporation into the Inca Empire in the late 15th century, and they are known for their textiles. What garment or object these strips originally edged, and exactly where they were found, are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: if you look at the dark triangles for a while and then shift your attention to the pink and off-white ones, the same woven band seems to reverse direction, even though the pattern never changes.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I see four fragile strips mounted on an ivory background, each with an upper geometric band and a lower ochre area frayed into fringe. The pattern of stepped triangles and zigzags in very dark brown, faded pink and off-white remains crisp, but I notice loose threads, breaks and losses, especially on the second strip from the top. As a conservator I am struck by their fragility: they are cotton fragments, finely woven yet slightly rough, preserved as they are without trying to reconstruct what is missing.

These four bands remind me of constellations aligned in the sky. Each strip is like a long, narrow horizon, with two thin lines framing the design above and below, and in the middle a continuous zigzag moving like a pulse. The stepped triangles bite into each other, dark and pinkish against a pale ground, like jagged mountain peaks in silhouette. I like to imagine someone on the central coast of Peru, between 1100 and 1400, weaving that rhythm to order the world through geometry.

They look like four long belts placed one above the other, as if for giants. On top they have little drawings of pointy triangles and zigzag lines chasing each other, in almost black brown and light pink. Below, lots of yellowish little threads hang down like messy little beards, some longer than others. They look very old and broken, with small holes and loose fuzz, especially the second one from the top. I imagine someone wove them from cotton a very long time ago and now people take care of them so they do not break more.
