What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical etching in dark ink on warm beige paper shows a narrow street enclosed by tall buildings on both sides, seen from within the crowd. The lower third is filled with a dense throng rendered in loose, overlapping lines: men and women in long robes, cloaks, turbans, and head coverings walk, talk, and turn toward one another. Few faces are fully described; most emerge briefly from hatching and shadow, giving the mass a restless, noisy movement. At the lower center, two dark figures with their backs turned act as an entrance into the scene. Rising above the crowd are poles or staffs, fabrics, and awnings. On the left, pale facades show small windows, protruding balconies, hanging cloths, and figures leaning from rooftops. On the right, a taller, heavily shadowed wall with a crenellated top and narrow openings dominates the edge. At the center background stands a building with a large arch, a carved balcony, open loggias, and a projecting wooden structure. The sky is almost empty and luminous, contrasting with the dark accumulation of bodies and shadows below. Fine, nervous strokes, dense cross-hatching, worn lines, and lighter sketch-like areas create dust, heat, stone, cloth, and depth. At the bottom margin are handwritten inscriptions and the artist's signature.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark crowd at the bottom and notice how few faces are fully defined. Then follow the street upward toward the bright arch at the center, where the architecture opens up. Finally, look at the edges of the rooftops and balconies: the small watching figures change the scene from a city view into a moment observed by many eyes.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail is found at the upper left: on a rooftop, half-hidden behind a railing, small figures lean over to watch the crowd below, almost as if they were also spectators of the print.

- Does this crowd feel like everyday life, a procession, or a scene constructed for a European viewer, and what visual clues support your reading?¿Esta multitud se siente como vida cotidiana, como una procesión o como una escena construida para un espectador europeo? ¿Qué pistas visuales sostienen tu lectura?
- How does the artist use darkness in the foreground and lightness in the sky to guide your eye through the street?¿Cómo usa el artista la oscuridad del primer plano y la claridad del cielo para guiar la mirada por la calle?

I pause on how the warm beige paper breathes beneath the dark ink. The etching is built with cross-hatching and nervous lines that create shadow, dust and weight. Below, the crowd is a dense weave of long robes, turbans and veils; above, the sky remains almost empty and bright so the eye can rest. I am drawn to what was left undefined: barely suggested faces, lightly sketched areas. That economy lets light do its work and preserves the vibration of a narrow street between tall walls and balconies.

I look at this vertical print as if it were an urban canyon aimed at the sky. Tall buildings on both sides leave only a bright strip above, like a makeshift observatory. Below everything is shadow and motion: the crowd fills the lower third and above their heads poles and cloths appear. In the background the large arch frames the light and the crenellated wall on the right marks the contrast between sun and shade. It is a game of depth made with fine lines, where scarce brightness makes the surrounding darkness even more valuable.

It looks like everyone went out into the street at once and there is no room left. I see lots of little heads with turbans and veils, and two people with their backs to us inviting me in. Up top there are tiny balconies and people peeking from the rooftops watching the bustle. On one side the wall is very dark and on the other the houses are lighter with little cloths hanging. If I keep walking with my eyes I reach the arch in the back. I like counting shadows and searching for faces hidden among so many little lines.
