What you would seeLo que verías
This central panel presents an intimate view inside the roofed pleasure boat, seen just above the waterline with the dark hull band and white-capped waves along the bottom edge. In the foreground, three women in refined kimono kneel on tatami over a light wooden deck. At the center, the largest figure wears a sand-beige kimono with a floral obi in teal and coral; she holds a slender kiseru smoking pipe delicately between her fingers as she looks to the right, a small black lacquer tobacco tray at her side. To her left, a woman in a soft orange kimono plays a small hand drum, while to her right a younger attendant with a pale hairband kneels attentively, also holding a drum. Above them hangs a striking canopy in black and pale peach, with gathered curtains in warm cream patterned with white chrysanthemums that frame the scene like a stage. The palette is muted and elegant — buff, peach, ink black, touches of vermilion and moss green — rendered with fine outlines and flat areas of color typical of woodblock printing. Light is even and diffuse, skin tones are porcelain-pale, and expressions are calm and idle. Subtle details such as the layered folds of silk, the lacquer shine, and the vertical signature at the left margin reward slow looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central smoker, whose relaxed posture anchors the whole panel, then follow the framing curtains and bold canopy that create a sheltered stage. Notice the small exchanges of gaze and gesture — the drum held lightly, the attendant’s attentive lean — which turn a quiet pause into a shared musical moment.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, the work is by Chōbunsai Eishi (1756–1829), dated about 1796–97, from Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). It is a color woodblock print and this sheet is one of a pentaptych titled Party on the Pleasure Boat Kawaichimaru. The full composition shows entertainers spread along the vessel — a young dancer having her hat adjusted, musicians with drums and shamisen, and women admiring a large floral arrangement of pine, lily and iris. This panel corresponds to the central group with the elegant smoker and musicians. Eishi was renowned for graceful images of fashionable women and urban leisure activities.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the delicacy of this color woodblock print from around 1796–97. I notice the muted palette of beige, peach and ink black, the fine lines and flat textures without strong shadows. I am drawn to the bicolor black and pale pink awning, the cream curtains with white chrysanthemums and the light wooden platform over tatami. The folds of the sand-colored kimono and the green and coral floral obi show impeccable color registration. The diffuse light and the vertical calligraphy in the margin confirm Eishi’s artisanal care.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I look at this leisure scene and think about how we observe subtle things. Here the light is diffuse, with no harsh shadows, like a cloudy sky at dawn over water. My eyes move from the dark hull line and white waves below to the roofed interior. I try to catch the almost invisible, the suggested smoke from the kiseru pipe held by the central figure in the sand-colored kimono. That patient attention, just like searching for a faint star, is what the work invites us to use to enjoy the ukiyo-e details.

Hi! I see three women sitting on a little boat floating over white foamy waves. The lady in the middle is the biggest and she wears a pretty sand-colored kimono with a green and coral flower sash, and she holds a long pipe called a kiseru. Next to her there is a small table with tobacco things and another woman plays a little hand drum. Above them there is a black and pink awning and curtains with white flowers. Everything looks soft and calm, as if they are resting and making music together.
¡Hola!
