What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, on a smooth neutral gray background, rests a small compact ceramic sculpture, elongated in form, seen in three-quarter side view. The piece depicts a coiled animal, probably a caiman or stylized feline, with a thick curved body that creates a shallow concavity or dish on its back. The surface is rough, eroded and mottled, with colors ranging from very dark brown near black to grayish brown with yellowish spots from wear. Soft side lighting emphasizes volume and texture: the originally burnished clay now looks matte, with flaking and whitish mineral deposits. Incised details are visible, forming a crosshatched or diamond grid along the back and tail, and modeled reliefs suggesting folded legs, a small head with snout and modeled eyes. The scale seems small and portable, only a few centimeters long. The foreground shows the belly and flank of the creature; the background fades from medium gray to darker gray, isolating the figure and highlighting its visual weight and archaeological character.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the coiled silhouette and try to locate the head and tail. Then look at the incised grid patterns on the back and the central hollow that explains its name as a dish. Finally notice the erosion and color shifts that speak of age and material history.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art source records the work as «Dish», by an unknown maker, culture Colombia, dated before 1921, technique pottery, category Ceramic, in the Art of the Americas department, Gift of W. A. Price. The source description provides no further details. By style and material it is probably a piece from a pre-Hispanic Colombian tradition, although no specific cultural affiliation or archaeological date is recorded. Many zoomorphic ceramics from this region had both everyday and symbolic functions. Without additional information, its original use, find context and exact chronology cannot be determined.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the surface: the once burnished clay is now opaque, mottled in dark brown and grayish brown, with yellowish wear and whitish deposits that speak of time and burial. I see flaking, pores and incised lattice patterns on the back and tail that still hold. The compact, coiled form creates a dish-like hollow on its back; the folded legs and modeled snout show careful hand modeling that erosion has not completely erased.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This little coiled creature reminds me of constellations, as if it held its own sky. Its back forms a small crater or bowl, like a miniature moon, and its curved body suggests a closed orbit. The incised diamond patterns look like stars or counting marks. I imagine that, just as we look at the sky to find our way, whoever made this portable ceramic also observed nature and turned it into something both useful and symbolic, even though we do not know its exact history.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little alligator curled up that turned into a dish! It is lying on its side, with its tiny folded legs and its tail with little diamond drawings. Its color is like chocolate mixed with earth and it has light spots, as if it were a bit old and dusty. On its belly it has a little hollow where I would put my marbles or my candies. I like to imagine it is sleeping and that if you touch it gently it will open its tiny eyes.
