A small horizontal print in black and gray ink on broad-margined, cream-colored paper with a slightly fibrous texture. The etched image is set slightly left of center, and beneath its lower right corner, outside the plate mark, appears the handwritten signature “A. Legros.” On the left, atop a slope, stands a solid building with towers, arched openings, and ruined or weathered walls, partially veiled by dark foliage: the abbey. Below it cluster farmhouses with steep tiled roofs and chimneys, and in front of them a lower shed with a long thatched roof whose strokes descend like straw. At center and right, dense, leafy trees with bright, cottony crowns contrast with the shadowed trunks. The sky occupies the upper half: on the left, turbulent clouds built from tight cross-hatching; on the right, a pale clearing crossed by fine diagonal lines of rain. The foreground is an uneven meadow with tufts of grass, stones, bushes, and several felled logs lying horizontally. There are no clearly visible human figures. The light is diffuse, stormy, and melancholic, and the whole scene is constructed from short strokes, nets of lines, and soft drypoint burr.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, where sparse diagonal lines suggest rain falling through a clearing in the sky, then move left toward the increasingly dense clouds. Notice how the abbey, although set highest, recedes behind the farm roofs: everyday work, not the monument, occupies the center. In the foreground, the felled logs and the uneven ground slow the gaze and reinforce the feeling that nothing is happening, and yet everything is enduring the weather.

ContextContexto

The Abbey Farm (La Ferme de l'abbaye), from around 1893, is an etching and drypoint by Alphonse Legros (1837–1911), a French artist who later settled in London and became a naturalized British citizen in 1880. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds this impression—a gift of Ralph King—Legros was a prolific etcher linked to the French etching revival of the 1860s and frequently depicted humble rural landscapes. His friendship with James Abbott McNeill Whistler preceded his move from Paris to London. The image does not securely identify a specific abbey or village; it is probably a rural motif treated with poetic license rather than a topographical record.

Curious detailDato curioso

Legros first made his name in Paris, but after befriending Whistler he moved to London and became a naturalized citizen in 1880; the museum notes that French and English sensibilities merge in his work.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the cream paper with wide margins and fibrous texture and the black and gray ink that forms the slightly off-center image. I notice how etching and drypoint create networks of lines and soft areas, from the tiled roofs to the long thatched roof with straw-like strokes. The handwritten signature A. Legros below the lower right corner and the Ralph King donation at the Cleveland Museum of Art speak of the care in preserving this small and melancholic print.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at the sky that fills the upper half and I am drawn to its contrast. On the left there are turbulent clouds made with dense crosshatching and on the right a pale clearing crossed by fine diagonal lines of rain. That diffuse and stormy light covers the abbey on the hill, the farmhouses and the trees with light cottony crowns. With no human figures, the landscape feels suspended under a storm that wraps everything in stillness and melancholy.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a farm below an old castle with towers and broken walls that sits on a little hill. Below there are small houses with chimneys and a shed with a long straw roof that looks made of little lines. There are fluffy trees and in the meadow there are stones, tufts of grass and fallen trunks lying down. It is raining on the right side with slanted little lines and the sky looks stormy. There are no people and everything feels calm and a little sad.
