It is a fragment of ivory-colored lace, roughly triangular in silhouette: widest at the top, where the edge is nearly straight though slightly uneven, then narrowing steadily until it ends below in a small lobed point. There is no separate foreground; the object is laid out flat, like a study specimen, with no human presence or scale reference. A dense, straight vertical stem runs down the center from top to tip. On either side, near-symmetrical motifs unfold: coiled spirals, C-shaped curves, small rounded flowers, and scalloped leaves that curl outward and then inward again. Between them open pierced spaces of very different sizes — ovals, teardrops, slits, and heart-like shapes — through which the black ground shows. The thread looks coarse relative to the delicacy of the design, with a grainy, knotty, handmade texture. Off-white predominates, with faint yellowish spots and loose fibers along the edges. Near the upper left corner, a fragment of a white label with barely legible writing peeks out from behind the lace, probably an inventory tag. The light is even and frontal, casting almost no shadow.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this lace point was made in Italy, possibly Milan, sometime in the 1600s, using bobbin lace with a bride ground; its maker is unknown and it entered the museum as a Gift of J. H. Wade. Milan was then one of Europe's important lacemaking centers, and bobbin lace was worked by crossing and twisting multiple threads wound on bobbins over a pinned pattern. A 'point' of this tapered shape was probably the shaped end of a border or an appliqué element for clothing or furnishing, but its original garment, owner, and exact use are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central stem and follow it downward to the tip, then compare the scrolls on the left and right to notice where the symmetry holds and where it gives way. Next, look not at the thread but at the black holes it frames: together they form a second pattern. Up close, the coarse grain and uneven edges make visible the handwork behind the ornament.","dato_curioso":"In bobbin lace, the 'brides' are not people: they are the small twisted or braided bars that bridge the open spaces and hold the separate motifs together, forming the ground that gives this technique its name.","preguntas":["How does your reading of the piece change when you attend to the empty holes rather than to the thread itself?","What does the anonymity of its maker suggest about how textile work has been valued and recorded compared with painting or sculpture?","If this point once finished a garment, how do you imagine the movement, weight, and sound of the complete piece?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Punta de encaje","se_ve":"La pieza ocupa casi todo el encuadre vertical sobre un fondo negro, liso y mate, que hace resaltar su forma y sus huecos. When I look at this fragment I see the work of the thick, knotted thread, with its grainy texture and loose fibers along the edges. The central axis is like a vertical Milky Way, and the openwork spaces are constellations: ovals, drops and little heart-like shapes that let the darkness behind show through. Everything is symmetrical, almost mirrored, as if someone wanted to order chaos with spirals and C-shaped curves. There are no people and no sense of scale, just that triangular shape tapering to a point.
